Star Wars: Vision and Star Wars: Young Jedi premiered on streaming service Disney+ on May 4. The next day, data from retail expert Reapp reveals that crisp sales experienced the highest volumes of the year, with over 430,000 units sold.
Since the beginning of the year, crisp sales have consistently grown month on month. It seems that Brits are opting to stay home and enjoy their favorite snacks while watching TV shows and movies from the comfort of their sofas.
In June, one of the highest sales days for crisps occurred on the day of the first ever Manchester derby FA Cup Final. Major supermarkets sold nearly 350,000 units of crisps on June 3.
April witnessed the peak month for crisp sales, with over 7.5 million units sold. The increasing cost of a visit to the pub has prompted fans to watch key sporting events, such as the Grand National and the FA Cup knockout fixtures, in their living rooms.
In May, sweet sales skyrocketed by 18% compared to April, reaching over 2.3 million units. Sales of sugary treats peaked at over 680,000 units on May 26, coinciding with the start of half-term break for schools across the country.
On the last day of the English Premier League (May 27), football fans stocked up on over 58,000 units of beer.
The Champions League Final, held on June 10, saw one of the highest beer sales volumes of the month, with 58,600 units sold across different beer brands.
During one of the hottest weekends in June (16 – 17), an increasing number of Brits opted to stay home and enjoy cold beers in their gardens. Beer sales reached nearly 70,000 units, while temperatures neared 30°C.
In February, beer sales received a boost from Manchester United and Newcastle fans when the two teams faced each other in the Carabao Cup final. Sales volumes on February 26 were 8% higher than an average Sunday in February, with more than 14,000 units sold on that day.
According to Reapp commercial director James Lamplugh, the popularity of the Big Night In has always been high among Brits. However, the impact of factors like the pandemic and rising food costs has further accelerated this trend. As a result, sales in this category are expected to continue growing as shoppers attempt to mitigate the impact of increasing food expenses on their lives.
