Leadbeater recently visited Paperland in Cleckheaton to present proprietors Kawal and Suman Devasher with a plaque commemorating their remarkable achievements, as well as those of their customers. As the proud owners of this local shop for the past 21 years, the couple has played a vital role in serving their community.
Expressing her satisfaction, Leadbeater said, “It was a privilege to visit Paperland and acknowledge their outstanding contributions to National Lottery Good Causes.” This independent shop, along with the support of National Lottery players, has helped raise an astonishing £17 million solely for Good Causes in Batley and Spen since 1994. Leadbeater has personally witnessed the incredible impact of local National Lottery-funded projects and the invaluable work they carry out within their communities.
During her visit, Leadbeater had the pleasure of meeting Kawal and Suman Devasher, who shared fascinating insights about their exceptional shop. She emphasized the significance of supporting local independent shops and the crucial role they play on high streets, acting as the lifeblood of their communities.
To mark his gratitude for the honor, Kawal expressed, “This December will mark 21 years since I took ownership of Paperland. I am immensely proud that our customers have contributed significantly to Good Causes through the purchase of National Lottery games at our store. Being recognized by Ms. Leadbeater for our efforts over the years is truly special.”
Karl Southworth, Head of Field Sales at Camelot, also acknowledged the importance of independent retailers like Paperland in propelling The National Lottery’s continuous success. He noted that these retailers serve as the backbone of The National Lottery and are often the public face of the organization. Southworth extended his heartfelt appreciation to these retailers and their customers for their unwavering dedication in raising an average of over £30 million every week for Good Causes throughout the UK.
Playing a National Lottery game not only provides entertainment but also contributes to making the UK a better place. Each ticket sold directs a proportion of the proceeds to a wide range of Good Cause projects that have a tangible impact on people and communities across the country. To date, The National Lottery has raised an astounding £47 billion for projects throughout the UK, underscoring the magnitude of its accomplishments.
It is important to note that while Camelot is responsible for generating returns to Good Causes through its operation of The National Lottery, it does not have a role in the allocation of funding. This responsibility falls under the purview of 12 lottery distribution bodies, each possessing specialized knowledge of their respective sectors.
