Mondelez International is set to release its zero-sugar Oreos across the US next month, reflecting the snack giant’s strategy to cater to the growing demand for mindful indulgence in the food and beverage industry.
Having successfully tested these snacks in China and several European markets, Mondelez has decided to proceed with a wider launch in the US for the upcoming year. This decision stems from positive feedback during the trial phase, indicating strong potential for the product.
The Oreos will be available nationwide in both Original and Double Stuf varieties, with a suggested retail price of $5.79. The brand team emphasized, “Oreo Zero Sugar presents a valuable opportunity for an iconic brand to truly disrupt the category, as well as expand the Oreo portfolio by providing more choices for consumers.” This launch aligns with Mondelez International’s overarching commitment to offering diverse options that accommodate varying lifestyles and dietary preferences.
These products in the US will be sweetened with maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium. Mondelez has refined its approach by integrating insights gained from markets such as China and Europe. The company has also introduced a resealable standup pouch for added convenience, ensuring a product that effectively meets the needs of today’s US consumers.
In October, Mondelez made the strategic decision to discontinue a ‘better-for-you’ dairy chocolate bar and snack range in the UK and Ireland. The low-sugar Cadbury Dairy Milk Fruitier and Nuttier Trail Mix, introduced in 2023, was designed to be low in saturated fats and portion-controlled, but fell short in terms of sales and availability.
Despite the effort to maintain indulgence and taste that Cadbury consumers expect, the response from the market was insufficient for sustainable sales. This follows a previous initiative where Mondelez pulled a version of Cadbury Dairy Milk that contained 30% less sugar, aiming to align with the health-conscious trend in the food and drink business.
