In Wakefield, Co-op is expanding its home delivery service by partnering with Starship Technologies to provide autonomous robot deliveries. The initial launch will cover 6,500+ households, serving 13,000 residents. Customers can order groceries through the Starship app, which is available for download on iOS and Android devices. Orders will be fulfilled by local Co-op stores and delivered minutes after the order is placed. This service will not only provide an additional online flexibility, choice, and convenience for Wakefield residents, but will also give them access to a range of grocery items at an affordable price.
This innovative solution is already successfully operating in several locations, including Northampton, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Bedford, and Cambourne. Wakefield marks the recent expansion of autonomous robot deliveries, with Starship Technologies making a significant impact on the UK retail industry.
Chris Conway, e-commerce director at Co-op, states that “we are committed to exploring new and innovative ways to increase access to our products and services, and delighted to be able to roll-out autonomous robot deliveries to provide additional online flexibility, choice and convenience in Wakefield.”
Cllr Matthew Morley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for planning and highways, highlights the positive environmental impact of this service: “the robots are zero emission; people won’t need to drive to the shops in their cars, and it will help to reduce food waste as people can order a small shop with the exact ingredients they need.”
Customers can schedule their delivery and can even track the location of their order on an interactive map. Starship’s robots are battery-powered, lightweight, and travel at the speed of a pedestrian. They use a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to navigate around obstacles, ensuring deliveries are timely and efficient.
This new delivery service will provide ultimate convenience, with a delivery fee starting at just 99p. Customers can even personalize their delivery experience by choosing a preferred robot character, with Sir Lance-a-bot, Gizmo, and Sunshine available to greet customers in their own unique way. Customers can also choose a song for their robot to play on arrival.
In conclusion, Co-op’s partnership with Starship Technologies provides an innovative and flexible solution to Wakefield residents. This partnership ensures that Co-op remains accessible and convenient, ultimately providing an improved shopping experience and leading the way in the retail industry.
