A recent study conducted by Material Focus reveals a concerning trend in the disposal of single-use vapes. According to the report, the number of discarded vapes has multiplied fourfold since last year, emphasizing the urgent need for retailers to promote the use of recycling facilities dedicated to vapes.

It’s worth noting that vapes contain valuable elements such as lithium and copper, both of which can be recycled for various purposes, including the power source for electric vehicles. Understanding the potential benefits, it becomes imperative for all stakeholders to actively encourage the recycling of vapes.

Scott Butler, the executive director of Material Focus, expressed his dismay regarding the escalating issue. He stated, “Since our previous findings were released, the problem of single-use vapes has worsened significantly. This product category has the unfortunate distinction of being one of the most environmentally wasteful, damaging, and hazardous consumer items ever created. Furthermore, the lack of compliance by producers and retailers with environmental regulations, and the failure to implement dedicated recycling drop-off points and systems, is deeply disconcerting.”

Butler further emphasized the importance of accurate marketing and messaging surrounding vapes, arguing against labeling them as “disposable.” Instead, consumers should be made aware that vapes are indeed recyclable, promoting responsible disposal practices.

The study conducted by Material Focus also shed light on consumer sentiment, showing that 54% of vapers would be more inclined to recycle single-use vapes if there were recycling points available in-store. The research further revealed that a significant 70% of vapers dispose of their vapes simply because they are unaware of the possibility to recycle them.

In response to these concerning findings, Material Focus has devised a comprehensive briefing note for both retailers and producers, providing valuable insight into how they can ensure compliance with environmental regulations pertaining to vapes. The briefing note offers practical guidance aimed at promoting responsible disposal practices and ultimately minimizing the environmental impact of single-use vapes.
