Nespresso customers now have two convenient options for recycling their coffee capsules with Royal Mail. Not only can they arrange a free doorstep collection from their local postie using Royal Mail’s returns service, but they can also choose to drop off their capsules at any of the 14,000+ Royal Mail locations, including Customer Service Points and Post Offices.

This new partnership between Nespresso and Royal Mail aims to provide nationwide access to simple and effective recycling methods for Nespresso capsules. It comes as research commissioned by Nespresso reveals that recycling should be made easier and more convenient. Despite 91% of Brits claiming to often recycle, many find the process confusing (42%) and difficult (32%).

One of the advantages of Royal Mail’s services is that just over half of their routes are completed on foot, helping to keep emissions low compared to other carriers. Anna Lundstrom, CEO of Nespresso UK & ROI, explains, “Royal Mail is not only an iconic British institution, it also is recognized for having the lowest emissions per parcel as their ‘feet on the street’ posties walk up to a billion steps a day. Recycling needs to be convenient, simple, and sustainable – and our partnership with Royal Mail is central to achieving that vision.”

Nick Landon, Chief Commercial Officer at Royal Mail, expresses the company’s enthusiasm to support Nespresso’s coffee capsule recycling. By leveraging existing delivery routes, Royal Mail can conveniently collect capsules during their regular mail deliveries. Furthermore, if customers are not available, Royal Mail can collect from a safe place. Landon adds, “To make it even more convenient, if customers don’t have a printer, our posties can print and bring the label to the doorstep. And if Nespresso customers don’t want to arrange a collection, they can drop their capsules off at one of our 14,000+ Royal Mail locations. This is part of our commitment to continuously make our services more convenient as we re-invent the way we deliver to and collect from our customers.”

In addition to the partnership with Royal Mail, Nespresso also co-founded the not-for-profit coffee pod recycling service, Podback, which is still available to its UK customers. Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability is evident in their capsule composition, which is made with 80% recycled aluminum. This recycled aluminum is then used to create new products like beverage cans and car components. Furthermore, Nespresso utilizes used coffee grounds for environmental purposes, such as creating soil improvers for cereal farms in East Yorkshire and producing renewable energy to power homes throughout the UK.
