The Chilled Food Association has introduced the UK’s inaugural comprehensive E. coli intelligence database, specifically designed for fresh produce and irrigation water. This initiative represents a major advancement in agricultural data transparency and reinforces national food safety efforts.

This innovative system offers growers and those involved in the produce sector access to objective, benchmarked microbiological data, establishing a centralized repository that previously did not exist on this scale in the UK.

The platform aggregates over 100,000 data points collected since 2024, encompassing irrigation water for Red Tractor Category 1 crops, along with testing before and after washing produce. It has now become the largest dataset of its kind in the UK, utilizing generic E. coli levels as a critical hygiene benchmark and creating a national standard for evaluating irrigation water quality. Prior to this, there was no uniform approach for assessing hygiene performance across the fresh produce sector; the newly launched database effectively addresses this need by offering a statistically reliable reference for food safety initiatives.

Data is uploaded on a weekly basis and categorized according to the source of water, the origin of the produce, and the type of crop. This structure enables businesses to track trends, moving away from reliance on fragmented internal results.

Robust confidentiality measures are integral to the system: data specific to individual companies remains confidential, and comparative insights are generated only when there is sufficient anonymized data available. Moreover, businesses maintain complete discretion over their operational responses should their results deviate from expected norms. Each year, the dataset undergoes an independent audit to ensure its reliability and precision.

The advantages of this database resonate throughout the entire supply chain. Growers and produce users can leverage independent evidence to showcase the efficacy of their hygiene protocols, bolster their HACCP systems, and fulfill due diligence obligations.

Retailers and purchasers will benefit from increased assurance regarding supplier performance, while auditors and regulatory bodies can engage in more informed discussions with food businesses, which may help diminish the likelihood of recalls, product withdrawals, and damage to reputations.

“This database changes everything,” commented Karin Goodburn, CFA director general. “For the first time, growers and produce users will be able to assess their own performance against a body of independent industry-wide evidence and validate the effectiveness of their controls.”

CFA members currently have access to this system, while non-members can subscribe to join. Those interested in participating, whether they are growers or produce users, can reach out to the association via email.
