In response to the increasing demand for recyclable packaging solutions, Royal Vaassen, in partnership with UPM Specialty Papers, has introduced innovative recyclable* and food-safe barrier paper options tailored for diverse end-use applications. The Barryrwrap concept addresses a spectrum of packaging needs, from moderate to the most stringent barrier requirements, including oxygen and moisture resistance.

As the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) recyclability criteria draw near, identifying packaging solutions compatible with widely established recycling infrastructures becomes crucial. Fortunately, paper and board recycling systems are extensively developed, ensuring they will meet future sustainability needs.

“Our barrier papers serve as a sustainable alternative to traditional laminates and plastics. They provide robust protection while emphasizing performance and circularity, making them suitable for existing production lines and products like coffee, stock, and chocolate,” explains Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager at Royal Vaassen.

“Barryrwrap Everest represents our premier barrier paper, specifically engineered for instant coffee and other dry products requiring maximum safeguarding. This material boasts superior barriers against moisture, oxygen, and light; its printing maintains exceptional clarity, and it seamlessly integrates with existing production lines. With its fully recyclable paper structure, Barryrwrap Everest stands as a sustainable and circular alternative to traditional aluminum laminates without compromising quality or processability,” he adds.

UPM SolideTM Lucent packaging paper forms an ideal foundation for Barryrwrap solutions. Its easy convertibility, extreme smoothness, and exceptional density reduce the necessary coat weights while ensuring adequate strength for high-speed production lines. Depending on application requirements, either lighter or heavier grammage of UPM Solide Lucent can be selected.

“We have conducted tests on Barryrwrap solutions for new, demanding applications in fiber-based and recyclable packaging, including canister-type formats suitable for products like chips and drink powders. Sample canisters will be available at the Fachpack trade fair in Nuremberg this September, where we welcome all interested parties in Barryrwrap solutions and UPM Solide Lucent base paper to engage with our experts,” adds Mika Uusikartano, Senior Manager, Product Portfolio Management at UPM Specialty Papers.

Fully compliant with food contact safety and recyclability standards, Barryrwrap solutions along with UPM Solide Lucent base paper will be showcased at UPM Specialty Papers’ stand 329, Hall 3A during Fachpack in Nuremberg, Germany, from September 23rd to 25th.
