Sweden’s Systembolaget Champions Lower-Carbon Paper Bottles as Path to Market

Frugalpac, a British innovator in sustainable packaging, leads the charge with the world’s first commercially available paper bottle for wines and spirits. This breakthrough highlights how Sweden is accelerating the transition toward lower-carbon packaging, as an emerging wave of drink brands embraces paper bottles throughout the nation.

The recent product launches illustrate that packaging with a notably reduced carbon footprint increasingly serves as a pathway to market within sustainability-focused and strictly regulated systems. Sweden stands as a global benchmark for environmentally conscious alcohol retail practices.

In Q4 2025, producers like Belizean Blue Spirits Company (Netherlands), Distillerie du Peyrat (France), and Fluid Minds (Sweden) secured listings at Systembolaget utilizing the Frugal Bottle. This demonstrates how food and drink sustainable packaging can offer a competitive edge in the market.

These brands join others already featured in Systembolaget, such as Buen Vato Tequilla Blanco by Alias Smith and Arniston Bay Sauvignon Blanc from South African producer Stellenbosch.

The Frugal Bottle consists of 94% recycled paperboard paired with a recyclable food-grade pouch liner. Remarkably, it is up to five times lighter than glass, incorporates 77% less plastic, and yields a carbon footprint that is up to six times lower than traditional glass bottles.

Systembolaget, recognized as one of the world’s most environmentally stringent alcohol retailers, evaluates packaging based on tangible environmental performance over tradition. This policy allows premium wines and spirits to be sold in non-glass formats, provided significant sustainability advantages are evident. In certain categories, current tenders explicitly state that products must be packaged in paper bottles.

Similar state-controlled systems are advancing sustainability across the Nordics, with Norway’s Vinmonopolet and Finland’s Alko increasingly prioritizing eco-friendly product selections.

Together, these Nordic monopolies are catalyzing a broader movement toward lower-carbon packaging throughout the global beverages sector.

Products available at Vinmonopolet in Frugal Bottles include Casa Volpi’s Italian red wine and San Alejandro’s organic Spanish offering, Querencia Garnacha 2024.

New Releases from Sweden: Cocktail, Rum, and Cognac

The Tapdance Espresso Martini, produced by Gothenburg-based Fluid Minds AB, modernizes the classic cocktail by combining Swedish vodka with espresso and coffee liqueur. Best served chilled over ice, it provides a contemporary and sustainable way to enjoy a premium espresso martini.

Fluid Minds CEO and Managing Director Ludwig Herbert Dinsmore Matsson stated:

“Tapdance was created to rethink what ready-to-drink cocktails can be. This espresso martini brings together craftsmanship, modern flavor, and lighter packaging in a format that fits contemporary drinking occasions.”

Belizean Blue Spirits Company has earned a Systembolaget listing for its Belizean Blue Signature Blend Rum, uniquely packaged in a Fairtrade Frugal Bottle edition. Aged for up to seven years by family-owned Travellers Liquors Ltd. in Belize, this rum features a smooth and sweet profile with coconut and vanilla notes.

Belizean Blue Spirits Company Founder and Managing Director Jacco Kroon remarked:

“We are proud to combine Fairtrade-certified rum production with innovative sustainable packaging. Our Signature Blend reflects Belize’s heritage while demonstrating that responsible choices can enhance premium products.”

Meanwhile, the family-owned Distillerie du Peyrat, a pioneer in organic cognac production, has launched its Organic Selection Cognac at Systembolaget, with a limited release of 4,200 bottles. Certified organic and aged for an average of three years, this cognac is produced without synthetic chemicals and packaged in a Frugal Bottle.

Distillerie du Peyrat Cellar Master Antoine Rault stated:

“Preserving our craft for future generations means protecting the environment it depends on. Sustainable practices and packaging are essential to passing on both our traditions and the essence of our cognacs.”

Lower-Carbon Packaging as a Path to Market

Frugalpac CEO Malcolm Waugh mentioned:

“Systembolaget is one of the toughest alcohol markets in the world to secure a listing. Lower-carbon packaging has transitioned from an option to a necessity for market access.”

“Our clients represent diverse producers, all recognizing that reducing packaging emissions enhances their market position in regions like Sweden.

“The Frugal Bottle offers brands a practical way to reduce carbon footprint without sacrificing quality or shelf appeal.

“This is why some of the tenders issued by Systembolaget mandate the use of our paper bottle, validating our efforts in this area.

“As the Nordics continue to lead, they are setting a precedent that the global market will be expected to follow in 2026 and beyond.”
