SIG and Nutrition from Water (NXW) have forged a global partnership aimed at pioneering integrated product concepts that merge algae-based protein beverages with advanced aseptic packaging solutions. This strategic initiative targets the nutrition gap prevalent in rapidly expanding economies, delivering essential protein-rich nutrition to underserved communities where it is critically needed.
The collaboration initiated at MISTA, a San Francisco-based global food innovation platform that SIG joined in 2023. MISTA facilitates collaboration among leaders in food, ingredients, and food technology, driving the transformation of the global food system. Given the United Nations’ projection that the world population will reach 10 billion by 2050, the demand for healthy, accessible diets that also safeguard natural resources has become increasingly urgent.
Focusing on fast-growing, underserved economies where nutrient deficiencies are most acute, SIG and NXW seamlessly combine NXW’s innovative algae-derived proteins with SIG’s prowess in aseptic carton and pouch packaging. This partnership will result in food and beverage products rich in essential algae proteins and micronutrients presented in efficient aseptic packaging. The product positioning will cater to various consumer needs, from basic nutrition for low-income households most affected by malnutrition to enriched products featuring additional healthy protein.
NXW’s advanced bioprocessing technology converts microalgae strains into high-performance ingredients. Their Marine Whey™ product line includes protein-rich, fiber-dense powders that are digestible and non-GMO, making them ideal for bridging gaps in malnutrition and macronutrient content. These ingredients not only supplement but can also replace animal and plant-based proteins, broadening options for food and beverage manufacturers globally.
SIG’s state-of-the-art aseptic packaging solutions ensure a long shelf life without refrigeration or preservatives. The flexible filling and packaging technology enables manufacturers to adapt to diverse formats and volumes efficiently. The partnership benefits from SIG’s global innovation centers, which facilitate rapid product development, collaborative innovation, and in-depth learning experiences with customers and consumers. Applications span yogurt-like drinks to protein-enriched beverages tailored for specific nutritional requirements.
Federico Duarte, CEO at NXW: “Our partnership with SIG is exciting because it allows us to look at nutrition as a whole system – from how biotechnology enables better nutrition, to how it’s packaged, distributed, and understood by consumers. The alignment could not be stronger: Together, we can unlock access to world-class nutrition for everyone, everywhere.”
Norman Gierow, Director Global Customer Marketing at SIG: “At SIG, we recognize the global challenges impacting the entire food and beverage industry. Addressing these issues requires strong collaboration with like-minded partners. We’re thrilled to join forces with NXW, whose innovative marine-based protein solution supports more accessible and nutritious food options. Combined with our unique aseptic filling technology and versatile aseptic packaging portfolio, we’re poised to deliver impactful, future-ready products to customers worldwide.”
