Sainsbury’s recently launched new trays for 10 products in their range, claiming to reduce plastic per tray by 70% and save 249 tonnes of plastic annually. These trays are now available in all stores. Claire Hughes, the director of product and innovation at Sainsbury’s, emphasized the importance of reducing plastic packaging to both their customers and the environment. As part of their Plan for Better commitments, Sainsbury’s is constantly seeking innovative ways to reduce or replace plastic in their packaging, aiming to achieve their plastic reduction targets.

Sainsbury’s has already made significant changes to their packaging by removing plastic trays from their So Organic and Taste the Difference products, resulting in a reduction of 10 million pieces of plastic per year. Despite the progress made, Sainsbury’s acknowledges that more needs to be done and remains dedicated to making bold changes in their packaging to achieve their goals.

In addition to the introduction of new trays, Sainsbury’s has also implemented other initiatives to reduce plastic. These include the removal of plastic bags from their banana range and the elimination of trays on whole chickens. These efforts reflect Sainsbury’s commitment to sustainable practices.

In their recently released trading update for the first quarter, Sainsbury’s reported a 9.8% increase in like-for-like sales, excluding fuel. Grocery sales performed particularly well, showing an 11% increase. Simon Roberts, the chief executive of J Sainsbury, emphasized their focus on battling inflation to ensure customers receive the best prices during these challenging times. As food inflation starts to decline, Sainsbury’s is fully committed to passing on savings to their customers.

Overall, Sainsbury’s dedication to reducing plastic waste and delivering value to their customers is evident in their packaging innovations and commitment to sustainable practices.
