In June 2023, Coca-Cola Indonesia, in partnership with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Indonesia (CCEP Indonesia), introduced the first bottles made from 100% rPET (excluding bottle caps and labels) for its popular soft drink brands. The recycled PET is provided by Amandina Bumi Nusantara, a leading recycling pioneer in Indonesia. The company operates a plastics recycling plant on the outskirts of Jakarta, utilizing two Starlinger recoSTAR PET HC iV+ bottle-to-bottle recycling systems and processing 3,000 tons of collected PET bottles monthly. Amandina produces clear bottle-grade rPET pellets for carbonated beverages and spring water, along with hot-washed flakes in clear and light-blue colours.
According to Suharji Gasali, Managing Director of Amandina Bumi Nusantara, “We selected Starlinger PET bottle-to-bottle recycling equipment due to its exceptional performance and reliability, endorsed by Coca-Cola System Indonesia. This partnership with Starlinger, known for high standards and compliance, aligns with our goal of efficient and trustworthy recycling solutions.”
The installation of the PET recycling systems was conducted by local technicians from Starlinger’s Indonesian branch office, PT Starlinger SEA, in autumn 2022. The Surabaya branch office provides support for machine installations, service, maintenance, and spare part orders for customers in the South East Asian region.
In terms of responsible sourcing, Amandina collaborates with Mahija Parahita Nusantara Foundation to collect post-consumer PET bottles, supporting sustainability goals for companies. CCEP Indonesia aims to make all packaging recyclable and have at least 50% of plastic bottles made of rPET by 2025. Additionally, the company targets the collection of 100% of plastic bottles for recycling by 2030, eliminating virgin plastic use.
Besides PET, other plastics like PE bottles and PP cups are also recycled in Indonesia. The government has outlined strategies to address plastic waste and promote recycling, with the involvement of private businesses crucial in driving environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Coca-Cola and Dynapack Asia support initiatives like Mahija Parahita Nusantara to promote responsible sourcing.
PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara is the first PET recycling company in Indonesia to achieve the SNI Marking Product Certificate (SPPT) for implementing the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 8424:2017, ensuring quality and safety in recycled PET products. The company has also obtained standards from the National Agency of Drug and Food Control, Halal, and FSSC 22000, approving the use of rPET in food and beverage packaging.
