Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, has partnered with Skånemejerier to develop a mono-material, polypropylene (PP) based packaging for ICA’s Hushållsost cheese, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable food and drink packaging.

The new packaging includes a mono-material base web and lidding film, all produced and printed by Mondi and converted for 1kg and 2kg blocks of cheese by Skånemejerier. It will be available in leading Swedish supermarket ICA and is designed for recycling, addressing the need for eco-friendly packaging in the food and drink industry.

Mondi’s mono-material solution offers high barriers against oxygen and water vapours, ensuring the product stays fresh on the supermarket shelf. With high puncture resistance and exceptional printability, the packaging effectively protects the cheese while enabling clear communication of the brand and recycling messages.

This innovative packaging coincides with the upcoming opening of Site Zero, the world’s largest sorting facility for used plastic packaging, in Sweden. Scheduled to go live in November 2023, this state-of-the-art facility will process used plastic waste from both Sweden and Finland. By utilizing mono-material design, the facility will be able to efficiently sort this solution for recycling, contributing to a circular economy.

Helene Brynell, Mondi’s Regional Sales Nordic Consumer Flexibles, emphasizes the importance of fit-for-purpose packaging design in reducing food waste and promoting sustainability. She states, “Our new mono-material solution is fulfilling exactly that: it keeps the cheese fresh while also keeping the packaging materials in circulation through design for recycling.”

Ingemar Jönsson, Packaging Manager at Skånemejerier, highlights the success of their collaboration with Mondi in bringing a fully recyclable packaging solution to market. He notes the efficient adaptation of materials and machinery, resulting in a sustainable, consumer-driven packaging solution that meets environmental demands.

Rickard Jansson, Development Engineer at Swedish Plastic Recycling, expresses optimism about the new packaging’s potential impact on reducing waste and promoting circular plastic flows. He explains, “By using mono-material film instead of laminate consisting of different types of plastic, we can sort out and recycle the packaging that is left in the system, thus avoiding incineration.”

The mono-material cheese packaging on ICA’s shelves received the PackNorth Award in the ‘Food’ category, showcasing its recognition in the industry for sustainable food and drink packaging. Additionally, it was acknowledged at the Empack fair in October in Stockholm, Sweden.
