A specialist compact linear multihead weigher from Ishida Europe is providing a fast and efficient solution for the weighing of nuts into pots at one of Norway’s leading confectionery and snacks manufacturers.

The Ishida CCW-R2-108PL at family-owned Brynild Gruppen’s factory in Fredrikstad is the ninth weigher to be installed, continuing a successful partnership between the two companies that dates back many years.

“Our Ishida weighers are fast, accurate and reliable and for these reasons offer a quick payback on our investment,” said Viggo Ersøybakk, the company’s Project Manager. “Equally important, the machines are well liked by our operators, thanks to their ease of set up and use.”

The compact design and excellent speed and accuracy of the CCW-R2-108 satisfied a number of key requirements for the launch of the new range of nuts in pots. In particular, Brynild wanted to minimise the height of the overall installation to make room for the filling system beneath the weigher.

With its linear design and precise product flow control, the weigher’s vibratory feeder troughs carry nuts to the weighing heads, helping Brynild to achieve speeds of around 50 pots per minute in two sizes, with accurate weights ranging from 15g to 270g. Included in the installation is a special distribution system beneath the weigher to transfer the two separate weighments into two pots simultaneously, which are then gas flushed and heat sealed to ensure maximum shelf life.

Although the CCW-R2-108 can operate at a top speed of 120 pots per minute, the pot filler regulates speeds to allow time for correct gas flushing, showing the proficiency and adaptability of the system.

The speed and accuracy of the CCW-R2-108 have been invaluable for the new products, which saw a surge in demand since their launch, particularly during the pandemic, handling around twice the amount of product as originally anticipated.

The CCW-R2-108 has been tailored to handle 13 different nut products, many of which are coated with salt or other spices. Its ribbed surface keeps product moving smoothly and the dust-proof cover ensures low particulate levels. With the ability to incorporate up to 200 presets for fast changeovers between products, the machine is easy to clean and operate, enhancing efficiency and productivity for Brynild.

At Brynild’s snacks and confectionery factories, the Ishida weighers play a crucial role in the company’s ongoing optimisation programme, which has seen volumes increase while reducing dependence on manual labor. Each packing line now requires just one operator following comprehensive training from Ishida, ensuring quick and effective set up and changeovers, and efficient maintenance of the weighers.

Ongoing investment in quality equipment, like the Ishida weighers, has been a key part of Brynild’s continued success and growth. Despite high initial purchase prices, the consistent performance and reliability of the machines enable operations to be maintained and offer a strong return on investment, particularly during periods of high demand like the pandemic. The partnership between Brynild and Ishida continues to drive innovation and excellence in food and drink packaging solutions.

Established in 1895, Brynild Gruppen AS is one of Norway’s largest family-owned confectionery manufacturers, employing around 220 people with a turnover of approximately 895 million NOK. The company produces a wide range of chocolate, confectionery, and snacks products for the home and Scandinavian markets, maintaining its heritage while driving towards a sustainable and efficient future.
