In the food and drink packaging industry, premium malt manufacturer Crisp Malt has launched an industry-first partnership with TerraCycle. This partnership comes in response to strong customer demand for more sustainable disposal solutions in the sector. TerraCycle, a global leader in collecting and recycling hard-to-recycle waste, is now working with Crisp Malt to enable the collection, recycling, and repurposing of used malt sacks in the UK.

Starting today, Crisp Malt customers can easily purchase TerraCycle Zero Waste Boxes directly through the sales or customer service teams. To celebrate this launch, the first 100 boxes will be offered at half-price. The innovative Zero Waste Box™ from TerraCycle provides a solution for storing, shipping, and recycling various types of hard-to-recycle waste. These boxes can be used by Crisp Malt customers to collect empty plastic malt sacks for recycling. The all-inclusive cost of around £131 per box (excluding VAT) covers recycling, shipping, and handling fees, with a large box capable of holding approximately 80-100 empty 25 kg malt sacks.

Ellie Wood, Sustainability Coordinator at Crisp Malt, expressed excitement about the new partnership, stating, “Our partnership with TerraCycle addresses the industry-wide challenge of used malt sack disposal, providing our customers with a simple solution to recycle their waste malt sacks and help them meet their ‘zero waste’ goals. If all our customers adopted this scheme, over 70 tonnes of plastic waste from sacks could be kept out of landfills and incinerators each year. This initiative aligns with our own ‘zero waste’ sustainability targets and offers a transparent and traceable sustainable waste management process.”

Julien Tremblin, General Manager at TerraCycle Europe, commended Crisp Malt’s proactive action in offering a recycling solution for plastic malt sacks. He highlighted the significant waste management challenges faced by the brewery, distillery, and malt-using industries and encouraged other maltsters to follow Crisp Malt’s example in promoting more circular waste management practices.

For over 150 years, Crisp Malt has prioritized sustainability and strong relationships across the supply chain. By offering this industry-first solution with TerraCycle, the company is furthering its commitment to meeting the sustainability objectives of suppliers, customers, and end consumers in the food and drink sector.
