Lindum Packaging, a prominent player in the food packaging industry, has successfully helped a world-renowned brewer cut down its movement in transport issues (MITs) by an impressive 80%. The company identified the problem when it noticed that changes in primary packaging, where heat-shrink film was replaced with cardboard sleeves, led to an increase in damaged goods during transportation.
Rick Sellars, the sales manager at Lindum Packaging, explained that damaged packs are a significant concern in the brewing industry as they cannot be resold and have to be discarded, leading to both financial and food waste. To tackle this issue, Lindum Packaging utilized its Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab and Innovation Centre in Grimsby to analyze the stability of pallets, reduce over-packaging, improve performance, save money, and reduce food waste.
In line with their testing procedures, Lindum Packaging tested different stretch films, wrapping patterns, and anti-slip layer sheets, and cardboard corners to identify and provide solutions for the movement in transport issues. They soon identified a suitable wrapping film and wrapping pattern that increased pallet stability without making significant capital investments, maintaining the company’s sustainability goals.
Notably, the new wrapping pattern did not require additional weight of stretch film when compared with the original pattern, resulting in consistent implementation on existing wrappers without interruption to factory production. Lindum Packaging’s Mobile Pallet Stability Test Lab was also deployed to the site to verify the pallet stability results and ensure equal performance to the trials completed at the Innovation Centre.
As Mr. Sellars pointed out, movement in transport and the safe delivery of goods is essential for businesses dealing with the 750 million pallet journeys every year in the UK. With up to 11% of all palletized goods arriving at the final destination with some damage, it is crucial to address packaging operations’ problems and assess them to identify and implement improvements that make a significant difference to operations and transit packaging performance.
It is, therefore, not surprising that Lindum Packaging’s efforts have proven to be a game-changer for the brewing industry. With the successful reduction of MITs and the elimination of damaged goods, it is clear that the company’s approach to food packaging and sustainability targets is one that businesses in the industry may wish to replicate.
In conclusion, Lindum Packaging’s innovation, expertise, and testing methods have paved the way for a significant reduction in movement in transport issues, making a big difference to their client’s operations, transit packaging performance, sustainability targets, and bottom line.
