GAIA Biomaterials, a Swedish company, has expanded its range of compostable certifications for its limestone-based bioplastic material Biodolomer in the USA. These new certifications cover Biodolomer T, allowing for the production of compostable products requiring rigid materials such as drinking mugs and food trays.

Recently, Gaia Biomaterials achieved its initial BPI compostability certificate for the thinner grades of Biodolomer designed for film applications. The new certifications specifically apply to Biodolomer T for Extrusion, Granulates, Sheet Resin, and Thermoforming Resin with a maximum thickness of 1000 microns. Biodolomer T is ideal for products in need of a solid material, like beer and coffee cups, as well as food trays.

“With these latest certifications, we can now offer a compostable material in the USA for various new applications that demand thicker and more sturdy materials,” stated Gaia Biomaterials CEO Peter Stenström.

BPI, the Biodegradable Products Institute, stands as the forefront authority in North America for compostable products and packaging verification. They ensure claims of compostability possess scientific backing as mandated by the FTC. Biodolomer T already holds a certification from the German bureau DIN Certco in Europe. Similar to other Biodolomer variants, it is limestone-based, free from microplastics, and decreases CO2 emissions by up to 80% when incinerated.
