Mondi, a prominent force in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, has partnered with Biedronka, one of Poland’s largest supermarket chains, to launch an innovative solution supporting the new deposit system: Recyklobox.

What is Recyklobox?

Recyklobox is a specially crafted container designed for the efficient collection of returnable packaging within the deposit system. Constructed from robust five-layer corrugated board, it ensures both durability and stability. The structure is comprised of two primary components: a lower section for collecting bottles and a lid featuring a corrugated attachment that facilitates the installation of a scanner, along with an opening for inserting bottles.

The corrugated board used in Recyklobox is made from a blend of 80% recycled paper and 20% virgin fiber. By utilizing recycled materials and allowing for reprocessing at the end of its lifecycle, Recyklobox aligns with the sustainability goals of both companies, making it a valuable solution in food and drink packaging.

“At Mondi, our ambition is to create solutions that go beyond packaging, as we understand the real impact these have on how modern retail operates. By developing Recyklobox together with Biedronka, we have combined functionality, environmental responsibility, and rapid implementation. We are pleased that together we have created an innovation that effectively responds to specific market needs,” says Mateusz Buchowiecki, National Key Account Manager at Mondi.

Simple Implementation, Cost-Effective, and Eco-Friendly

Recyklobox distinguishes itself through its straightforward logistics and assembly, enabling rapid deployment across numerous retail locations. In comparison to traditional machines used within the deposit system, Recyklobox serves as a far more budget-friendly solution while providing equivalent functionality. This innovative approach allowed Biedronka to collect 29,152,902 returnable bottles by the end of March, prior to the installation of traditional machines in all stores.

“Recyklobox is an example of how innovation can go hand in hand with responsibility. In our cooperation with Mondi, we chose a solution that allows us to respond quickly and efficiently to the new legal requirements while supporting the use of sustainable materials,” emphasizes Katarzyna Garbarska of Jeronimo Martins Polska.

This initiative is not the first collaboration between the two companies. Previously, Mondi and Biedronka successfully implemented a closed-loop program, showcasing that cost efficiency, functionality, and environmental stewardship can coexist. The new project represents a significant step toward fostering a more sustainable retail model in Poland. By leveraging Mondi’s expertise in designing innovative solutions and Biedronka’s extensive operational scale, they have developed a solution that not only meets legal requirements but also genuinely aids consumers in their daily efforts toward environmental protection.
