As interpack 2026 approaches, Domino Printing Sciences, a leader in advanced variable data printing technology, has unveiled the Gx-Series PRO Printhead. This new thermal inkjet (TIJ) solution supports manufacturers in adapting to the shift towards GS1 Digital Link and variable 2D codes in the food and beverage sector.
With the increasing demand from retailers and supply chains for more transparency and accuracy, the adoption of GS1 2D coding has emerged as a pivotal development in packaging identification. Manufacturers are now seeking coding systems capable of producing larger print areas and maintaining high-speed performance without sacrificing precision, particularly as production lines become more complex.
The Gx-Series PRO Printhead focuses on three essential goals:
- Waste Reduction: This technology enhances applications such as dynamic pricing, automated expiration checks, and expedited, precise product recalls by incorporating vital best-before and batch information directly into each 2D code. Coupled with Domino Automation’s centralized label management and automated deployment software, it helps manufacturers and retailers ensure code accuracy prior to printing, thereby minimizing product and label waste while reducing the risks associated with recalls in terms of finances, regulations, and reputational damage.
- Speed: It facilitates the production of clear, high-contrast GS1 2D codes at industrial line speeds. This is further enhanced through its seamless integration with Domino’s R-Series smart vision system, which automates inline inspection to verify each code and identify potential issues before they impact production.
- Compliance: In support of legislation, Domino is developing both water-based and solvent-based inks that comply with food packaging standards. The company is at the forefront of producing food-safe packaging inks that adhere to EuPIA GMP guidelines.
The Gx-Series PRO Printhead boasts a 23 mm print height with high optical density, exceptional resolution, and extended throw distance, making it particularly suited for high-throughput applications. It effectively handles fresh and chilled food products, including meat, fish, and poultry, as well as pharmaceuticals and direct-to-box printing. Its versatility extends to general-purpose applications as well. When integrated with Domino Automation and the R-Series smart vision systems, it offers a comprehensive solution for coding, verification, and data management all from a single source.
James Gibbins, the Global Thermal Inkjet Product Manager at Domino, stated, “The GS1 Digital Link transition is arguably one of the most significant shifts in variable data coding. With our new Gx-Series PRO Printhead and our R-Series vision system, we provide manufacturers with a simple, fully integrated solution for coding and verification – all from a single trusted supplier.”
Building on its extensive expertise in TIJ printing, the Gx-Series PRO Printhead is designed to be flexible, optimized, and prepared for future advancements, allowing customers to navigate through rapid technological and regulatory changes effectively.
