Swedish agri-food group Lantmännen is making a substantial investment of approximately Skr700m ($73m) to establish a new production facility in Örebro. This initiative aims to enhance its bread manufacturing capabilities.
The company stated that this investment, executed through its Unibake bakery business unit, signifies a “strategic leap forward” in scaling operations and boosting production capacity.
Lantmännen Unibake has operated a bakery in Örebro since 1963, consistently producing specialty bakery items such as hotdog and burger buns. Notably, it has a daily production capacity that exceeds two million pieces, according to the company’s announcement.
The new facility will cover 13,000 square meters across three floors and will be constructed within the existing factory area.
Importantly, the new facility will incorporate sustainable features, including solar panels and smart technology upgrades, as part of the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
According to Jonas Lindell, managing director of Lantmännen Unibake Sweden, “This new facility allows us to meet growing customer demand while strengthening our position in the region.”
He emphasized, “It reflects our strong commitment to Swedish food production and represents a long-term investment in reliability, product quality, and innovation.”
Lantmännen announced that construction will commence in the autumn, with operations expected to start in 2027.
Lindell further noted, “With the expansion, we are increasing capacity and thus Swedish food production. The building incorporates a range of measures that support our climate ambitions – including solar panels and technology upgrades.”
He added, “These enhancements reflect our continued focus on responsible growth and incremental improvements in environmental performance.”
Headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark, Lantmännen Unibake manages over 30 bakeries across Europe, Australia, and the US.
The company serves customers in the international foodservice sector, including quick-service restaurants, and retail, with sales spanning more than 60 countries.
With a turnover of €1.2bn ($1.3bn), the business employs around 6,000 individuals.
Its brand portfolio features prominent names such as Schulstad, Bonjour, Myllyn Paras, Korvbrödsbagarn, Vaasan, Pastridor, Hatting, and Schulstad Bakery Solutions.
This latest investment follows the company’s earlier decision to allocate Skr1.2bn to construct a new facility for plant-based proteins in September.
Located in Lidköping, this facility will primarily produce plant-based proteins sourced from peas, while also utilizing fava beans as raw materials.
Earlier this month, Lantmännen acquired around 10% of Sproud, a local company specializing in plant-based milk alternatives.
Sproud, founded in 2018, manufactures a variety of plant-based milks, primarily using split yellow peas as the key ingredient.
In February, Lantmännen’s meat and charcuterie division, Scan Sverige, announced the acquisition of Swedish peer Lindvalls Chark to “broaden its business portfolio.”
