Ferrero is moving ahead with plans to establish its first manufacturing operation in Romania.

Reports that the privately held confectionery and snacks group was considering a facility in Timișoara have been followed by confirmation that Ferrero is negotiating the purchase of an existing industrial site.

“The project reflects Ferrero’s intention to establish a state-of-the-art industrial facility, building on Romania’s strong production tradition, strategic location and availability of skilled talent,” the company behind Nutella and Kinder said.

Although Ferrero operates a commercial office in Romania, the group currently has no production plants in the country.

Ferrero did not answer Just Food’s questions about the deal’s value, the anticipated construction schedule, the product categories planned for the facility, or the markets across the region that it could supply.

The confectionery manufacturer said additional information on operations would be released at the “appropriate time”. It also said it would “continue to work in close dialogue with the relevant national and local authorities to build a sustainable, long-term industrial partnership in Romania”.

The planned Romanian manufacturing site is the latest in a series of capital expenditure initiatives announced by Ferrero internationally.

In July, Ferrero unveiled an $86m expansion at its Guanajuato facility in Mexico, with the investment intended to raise Nutella production capacity.

The Mexico project came after the company disclosed in June that it would commit €60m ($67.2m) to production facilities in France, also to support the Nutella brand.

The French investment covers Ferrero’s Villers-Écalles plant in Normandy and a second facility in Nieppe, located farther north and operated by the “affiliate” Biscuits Delacre.

Meanwhile, in August, Ferrero acquired Purely Elizabeth, a US food company established in 2009 that makes granola, oatmeal and cereal products.

The purchase followed Ferrero’s $3.1bn acquisition of US cereal producer WK Kellogg in July 2025. That deal expanded Ferrero’s portfolio with brands and products such as Froot Loops and Raisin Bran.
