Temperature-controlled logistics specialist Thermotraffic has increased capacity at its Wrexham distribution centre through the addition of an automated cold storage facility.

Completed on 28 September 2026 and scheduled to become operational in October, the project provides approximately 19,300 additional pallet positions.

The site’s overall capacity now stands at about 33,150 pallets, representing storage for up to 77,000 tonnes of product.

This is Thermotraffic’s first automated warehouse operation in the UK. According to the company, the new automation technology is designed to raise operational efficiency while supporting improved workplace safety.

The expansion also incorporates a new production area, allowing the Wrexham site to provide storage, product handling and a range of value-added services from one location. These include labelling, repacking, X-ray and metal detection, blast freezing, up-tempering and microwaving.

Thermotraffic said the combination of increased cold storage capacity with integrated handling and production capabilities will enable customers to limit avoidable supply chain movements and manage seasonal demand peaks and fluctuating volumes more efficiently.

The company added that it intends to maintain its investment in capacity, automation and value-added services as demand for temperature-controlled logistics continues to grow across the food and beverage supply chain.
