Le Pain Quotidien, a renowned Belgian bakery-café chain, is making a significant return to the Indian market after successfully signing a master franchise agreement with Bake & Brew Private Limited. This strategic partnership represents a pivotal moment for the brand as it re-establishes its presence in India.

Originally introduced in India in 2010 with a flagship store in Mumbai, Le Pain Quotidien faced challenges and exited the market during the pandemic in 2020. However, with renewed vigor and a solid plan, the company is poised to reclaim its place in India’s bustling café scene.

With an initial investment estimated at Rs 35 crore (approximately $4.1 million), Le Pain Quotidien and Bake & Brew envision launching two prominent flagship stores in Mumbai within the next six months. This is just the beginning, as both partners aim to expand to other major cities across the country shortly thereafter.

The bakery-café chain has ambitious plans to capitalize on key travel hubs, with a goal of establishing over 100 outlets throughout India by 2035. This expansive growth strategy is a significant part of their overall mission to foster community and provide exceptional dining experiences.

In an insightful post on LinkedIn, Le Pain Quotidien’s CEO Annick Van Overstraeten emphasized the importance of this move, describing it as a “significant step” in the company’s global expansion strategy. The brand is also exploring openings in various international markets, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Peru, demonstrating their commitment to growth.

“We are ecstatic to bring Le Pain Quotidien back to India. This marks a new chapter where we aim to create spaces that foster a sense of community, offering an authentic dining experience that celebrates the joy of simple, nourishing food. Partnering with Bake & Brew and (Managing Director) Brijesh Agrawal ensures we meet the local market’s expectations and sustainability goals,” she noted.

In keeping with its global identity, the Indian branches of Le Pain Quotidien will maintain an extensive menu, with approximately 80% of offerings reflecting its international offerings. Meanwhile, 20% of the menu will be thoughtfully adapted to cater to local tastes. Additionally, the cafes will feature a diverse selection of healthy beverages, including house-made lemonades, specialty teas, and fresh coffees.

Furthermore, this expansion is expected to create around 1,500 new jobs, bolstered by skills training programs aimed at enhancing the workforce’s capabilities. The initiative will not only boost the local economy but also contribute to the overall development of the hospitality sector in India.

Founded by Alain Coumont in Brussels in 1990, Le Pain Quotidien currently operates more than 200 locations across 18 markets worldwide. The brand’s commitment to quality and community is a driving force behind its menu decisions, ensuring a familiar dining experience while also embracing local flavors.

Bake & Brew, established in 2024, is a newly formed venture aimed at facilitating Le Pain Quotidien’s expansion within India. This venture is supported by the Gurugram-based automotive parts manufacturer, Nalanda Group, further solidifying the partnership’s foundation.
