Beneo Launches Barley Beta-Glucans to Promote Heart Health barley beta-glucans, Beneo, heart health Food and Beverage Business

Beneo has launched a new wholegrain barley flour ingredient called Orate β-Fit, which contains 20% beta-glucans. This innovative product aims to target consumers who are seeking to improve their heart health and regulate blood sugar levels. Orate β-Fit joins Beneo’s existing functional fiber product line, which already includes Inulin and Oligofructose ingredients, and will be available worldwide.

The versatility of this flour lies in its solubility, clean taste, neutral color, thickening properties, and stable pH. It can be easily incorporated into daily meals, such as breakfast cereals, bread, baked goods, dairy alternatives, and pasta. Consuming just 15 grams of Orate β-Fit provides individuals with the recommended 3 grams of beta-glucans per day, which has been shown to lower cholesterol levels.

Beta-glucans, which are viscous and soluble dietary fibers, work by thickening food and slowing down its digestion in the intestines. These polysaccharides, composed of glucose molecules linked by mixed β (1-4) and β (1-3) bonds, have been extensively studied for their positive effects on blood sugar management and cardiovascular health. Barley beta-glucans have been associated with reducing the glycemic index and lowering blood cholesterol levels, both of which are key factors in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. Additionally, they act as prebiotics, nourishing beneficial gut bacteria.

The health claims of cereal beta-glucans have been approved by official bodies in Europe (EFSA) and the US (FDA). As consumers become increasingly aware of the link between diet and overall well-being, there is a growing demand for healthier food choices. According to recent surveys, 69% of consumers worldwide express interest in products that promote heart health. This shift in consumer behavior reflects a desire for personal well-being and a heightened consciousness regarding cardiovascular disease, which currently causes around 3.9 million deaths in Europe each year.

Beneo’s decision to produce Orafti β-Fit using the entire barley kernel demonstrates their commitment to both financial and sustainable considerations. By maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing waste, this eco-friendly milling and dry enrichment process proves to be a viable and environmentally responsible approach. Notably, no water resources are required for the flour’s production, addressing concerns about water scarcity and reducing the ecological footprint of the manufacturing process. Beneo aims to inspire consumers to make positive food choices by investing in research and development on plant-based products.

In summary, Beneo’s introduction of Orate β-Fit, a wholegrain barley flour ingredient with high beta-glucan content, caters to consumers’ growing interest in improving their heart health and managing blood sugar levels. This versatile flour can be easily incorporated into various everyday foods, and its health benefits are supported by scientific research. As consumers prioritize their well-being and show a heightened awareness of the impact of diet on cardiovascular health, Beneo’s sustainable production approach aligns with their demand for healthier and environmentally responsible options.
