JM Smucker Eliminates COO Position Amid Leadership Restructuring

JM Smucker Eliminates COO Position Amid Leadership Restructuring Non-Alcoholic Beverages, soft drinks Food and Beverage Business

JM Smucker is restructuring by eliminating its COO position as part of significant leadership changes within the U.S. food and beverage company.

On February 10, the owner of Hostess snacks and Folgers coffee announced that COO John Brase, who has been with the company since 2020, has “transitioned from the company.”

In light of these changes, Mark Smucker, chair and CEO, has resumed the role of president. Additionally, CFO Tucker Marshall will now take on expanded responsibilities as executive vice president overseeing JM Smucker’s frozen handheld, spreads, and sweet baked snacks divisions. Notably, the sweet baked snacks segment has faced increasing pressure recently.

Back in June, JM Smucker indicated it would “narrow our priorities” for its sweet snacks division after recording substantial impairments. The company faced impairment charges totaling $980 million, comprising approximately $867.3 million linked to goodwill and $112.7 million associated with the Hostess brand. In March, JM Smucker reported impairments exceeding $1 billion for these units.

During an analyst call in August, Mark Smucker shared a strategy to enhance the sweet snacks unit’s performance through initiatives such as reducing SKUs by 25%, closing a factory, and establishing a focused sales force. He expressed confidence in Tucker’s experience and enterprise-wide knowledge, stating, “Tucker’s experience as CFO positions us to continue the strong momentum in Frozen Handheld and Spreads while also ensuring we stabilize and improve profitability in sweet baked snacks.”

Other notable promotions include Rob Ferguson, who has moved up from senior vice president and general manager of coffee and procurement to chief product supply officer and executive vice president, overseeing JM Smucker’s coffee, pet, and away-from-home businesses. Jill Penrose will now serve as chief people and administrative officer and chief of staff, adding corporate strategy duties to her portfolio. Tim Wayne has been appointed general manager of the coffee and away-from-home sectors, while Robert Crane will transition to head of sales and international, assuming responsibility for JM Smucker’s global operations.

The company has announced that senior vice presidents Randy Day and Byran Hutson, who oversee operations and information services respectively, will retire. Furthermore, JM Smucker is initiating searches for a chief technology officer to lead its AI strategy, along with senior vice presidents for operations and supply chain and for the science and technical communities.

In leadership updates, Katie Williams has been named chief marketing officer, effective March 9, succeeding Gail Hollander.

Looking ahead, JM Smucker anticipates maintaining its fiscal 2026 full-year guidance, initially issued in November, and will provide a comprehensive update during its third-quarter earnings call on February 26. The November forecast included an adjusted EPS range of $8.75-$9.25, adjusted from earlier projections of $8.50-$9.50. The company expects net sales growth between 3.5% to 4.5%, up from the previously estimated 3%-5%, with “comparable” net sales growth expected at 5%-6%, as price increases compensate for lower volume and mix.

For the six months ending October, JM Smucker reported a 1% increase in net sales, totaling $4.44 billion, while operating income fell by 11% to $464.1 million. However, net income rose by 23% to $197.4 million.

Analyst Robert Moskow from TD Cowen suggested that these leadership changes could be indicative of JM Smucker preparing for future CEO succession. While the company did not clearly categorize these changes as part of a succession plan, there is growing speculation around potential candidates for the CEO role, especially given Mark Smucker’s comments about being the “last Smucker family CEO.”

Overall, these developments reflect ongoing shifts in the food and drink business, as JM Smucker navigates significant challenges in the food and beverage industry trends and adapts to changing consumer preferences.
