According to the latest analysis from the retail data specialist, bread, yoghurt, and biscuits have experienced price hikes across the nation’s supermarkets.
Yoghurts have seen the highest price increase, with a nearly 28% rise since 2022. As a result, shoppers are cutting back on this dairy product, leading to a sales decline of almost 17% since 2022.
Similarly, chocolate snack prices have also risen by a quarter (25%) compared to the same period last year. Sweet treats are typically the first to go when cutting corners on the lunchbox, with chocolate sales experiencing the highest decline across the categories, nearly 25%.
In addition, the average price of loaf bread has inflated by 16% year-on-year. Mayonnaise and biscuits have also witnessed an almost 10% increase, as reported by Reapp data.
As of today, the total price of a typical school lunchbox is now £1.92, up from £1.60 during the same time last year.
James Lamplugh, Reapp’s commercial director, stated: “As the school gates reopen, our latest analysis shows that the cost of a modern lunchbox is increasing considerably, reflecting the larger struggle shoppers are facing with the spiraling costs of everyday essentials during the cost of living crisis.”
