The baking industry is reeling from the news that Alcester-based bakery has gone into liquidation. According to a social media announcement, the firm “has closed its oven doors for the last time” and thanked loyal customers for their “support and patience over recent months.”
Founded in 2007 by two fathers and their sons, the bakery produced a diverse range of cakes and bakes that garnered a loyal following for its limited edition seasonal products for Valentine’s Day, Easter, and Christmas. It operated out of the Arden Forest industrial estate in Alcester.
Despite supplying notable retailers including Spar, Co-op, Budgens, Londis, and Nisa, some retailers have reported availability issues in recent weeks, while the closure of the bakery caught others off guard.
Laurence Smith, former marketing director at Unilever, his wife Megan, and their business partner Mark Lewis purchased the company in 2019. Evidence shows that, at the end of 2021, the firm employed around 100 individuals; however, no spokesperson has issued a comment since the Facebook announcement.
Indeed, the bakery industry must come to terms with this closure, and the future of the firm’s staff remains uncertain.
