Tyson Foods announced that it will deploy artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted autonomous trucks to optimize supply chain efficiency for its prepared meats, in collaboration with Gatik – a leader in autonomous “middle-mile” logistics.

The implementation of autonomous trucking will revolutionize Tyson Foods’ middle-mile logistics operations. This cutting-edge solution combines AI technology with autonomous vehicles to transport refrigerated trailers over predetermined short-haul routes. These routes primarily serve Tyson Foods’ distribution and storage facilities in Arkansas.

These shorter middle-mile routes are perfect for autonomous applications due to their high repeatability and limited territorial scope, simplifying the regulatory compliance process. Tyson Foods recognizes these advantages and aims to leverage this collaboration to enhance the reliability of its supply chain, especially considering the prevailing truck driver shortage across the nation.

With the American Trucking Associations estimating a doubling of the current driver shortage by 2031, the implementation of autonomous trucks is crucial to ensuring uninterrupted operations amid this shortage. Tyson Foods also emphasizes its commitment to supporting drivers by providing them opportunities to transition into other transportation positions within the company. During the initial phase of implementation, a safety driver will be present in the cab to monitor the autonomous system and take control if necessary.

Aside from addressing the driver shortage, autonomous trucking offers substantial productivity gains. Unlike human drivers, autonomous vehicles can operate continuously, maximizing efficiency and minimizing downtime in the supply chain.

The food and beverage industry faces persistent challenges and disruptions in recent years. To build resilience in their supply chains, companies have been actively hiring skilled professionals with agility in addressing these shocks. However, the scarcity of talent in the supply chain and logistics sector is leading to increased adoption of automation.

According to a survey conducted by UK recruitment giant Hays, over 75% of employers seeking to fill supply chain and logistics roles anticipate a shortage of applicants. This talent scarcity is driving businesses to consider automation technologies.
