Recent reports indicate that Aldi has experienced a staggering 50% increase in basa sales over the past year, positioning it as the third-fastest-growing product within the retailer’s core fish range.
Moreover, mackerel and yellowfin tuna have also witnessed a surge in popularity, with sales rising by up to 15%. This shift occurs as consumers increasingly explore alternatives to classic favorites like cod and salmon.
According to the latest Kantar data, Aldi’s volume share in the fresh fish segment has reached 12.9%, reflecting an 11% growth from the previous year. This places Aldi as the third-largest retailer by fresh fish sales among major UK supermarkets.
In response to this growing demand, Aldi is launching a new Lobster Mac & Cheese, alongside Whole Lobster and Lobster Tails, as part of its Specially Selected Christmas range.
Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, commented:
“Shoppers are becoming more adventurous when it comes to fish and seafood, and we’re working closely with our suppliers to make sure we’re offering new flavours and premium options for shoppers to try, all at affordable prices.”
Additional insights from Lumina Intelligence reveal that the overall growth in fish, fresh meat, and poultry has reached four percentage points over the past year, ending on October 12, 2025. This growth is predominantly fueled by health-conscious shoppers.
Martina Di Rocco, Senior Insight Manager at Lumina Intelligence, noted:
“This increase has been primarily driven by shoppers aged 25 to 34, particularly those living with their partner and children. The main mission associated with this growth was planned top-up shopping. Notably, the uplift has come from more affluent shoppers who are highly health-conscious and willing to pay a premium for product quality.”
Di Rocco further stated:
“This aligns with the broader trend we’ve been observing around growth in health-focused behaviours and scratch-cooking.”
As grocery shoppers continue to seek healthier, premium options, it is clear that the seafood sector is poised for ongoing growth.
