One of the leading Scottish packaging companies, Vegware, has achieved a significant milestone in their waste collections. Close the Loop, their trade waste collection service for central belt Scotland, successfully composted 10,000 binloads of used Vegware packaging and food waste in 2023. This service operates at over 50 sites, including prominent locations like Glasgow Science Centre, Fife College, and Edinburgh’s Dynamic Earth, demonstrating Vegware’s expertise in sustainable end-of-life solutions.

Reaching the milestone of 10,000 binloads in a year marks a pivotal moment for Vegware’s in-house waste management consultants. It underscores the growing demand and effectiveness of UK compostable packaging waste collections, establishing Vegware as a leader in providing sustainable solutions for waste management.

Aside from diverting compostable waste from landfills, Close the Loop offers Scottish foodservices a solution to the pressing global issue of food waste. According to businesswaste.co.uk, the UK generates a staggering 9.5 million tonnes of food waste annually, with a significant portion ending up in landfills. By converting compostable waste into high-grade compost, Close the Loop helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and methane emissions, while enriching the soil with essential nutrients.

Phoebe Russell, Vegware’s waste management consultant overlooking Close the Loop, expressed the significance of achieving the 10,000 binloads milestone. She stated, “Reaching 10,000 binloads of compostable packaging and food waste is an important milestone for our waste services. 2023 took the service into a new era, with a rebrand, expansion of the coverage and a landmark amount of bins sent to compost. It shows that composting collections work and that Vegware can provide real results.”

Vegware’s Environmental team offers free waste consultations for businesses seeking to compost their Vegware products. With the guidance of a chartered waste consultant, they assisted 45 sites across the UK in setting up Vegware composting collections in 2023. For more information, visit: vegware.com/keentocompost.
