UNITED CAPS, a leading international manufacturer specializing in caps and closures, particularly for the infant food packaging sector, has announced that its KINDCAP has secured the esteemed Gold Prize at the Sustainability Design Competition during the Shanghai World of Packaging (swop). This global competition is organized by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).

The Sustainability Design Competition showcases innovative designs that promote environmental stewardship while adhering to the highest standards of functionality and user satisfaction. KINDCAP’s recognition with the Gold Prize highlights its groundbreaking innovation in sustainable packaging, ensuring superior performance without compromising on ecological integrity. As the thinnest and lightest closure available for infant milk powder cans, KINDCAP excels in performance while prioritizing user convenience with its flexible, easy-opening design. Remarkably, its advanced structure maintains shape integrity despite its ultra-lightweight nature.

“This award confirms our approach of uniting sustainability and innovation,” says Astrid Hoffmann-Leist, Chief Innovation/Communications Officer and Business Director for Asia Pacific at UNITED CAPS. “Our KINDCAP proves that ecological responsibility and technological expertise can work hand in hand.” She adds, “Our goal was to create a cap that’s kinder to budgets and to the planet as well. It was an ambitious development and proof that KINDCAP is a bold step forward for the packaging industry. This award is a testament to our unwavering focus on innovation and sustainability, proving that high-performance solutions can also be environmentally responsible.”

Pioneering a More Sustainable Future

KINDCAP emerges from extensive research and development, encapsulating UNITED CAPS’ commitment to sustainability through an innovative three-stage process:

  • Redefining materials: A unique Polypropylene (PP) blend has been developed to significantly reduce plastic usage.
  • Transition to zero CO2 electricity: Since 2023, all European production sites have operated on wind energy.
  • Integration of bio-resins: The incorporation of wood-based bio-resin, Crude Tall Oil (TO), decreases reliance on fossil raw materials and aids in CO2 storage.

These strategic initiatives have enabled UNITED CAPS to achieve a remarkable 72% reduction in CO2 emissions (Cradle to factory gate) compared to traditional snap caps. The Gold Prize serves as a significant milestone, reinforcing UNITED CAPS’ leadership in sustainable food and drink packaging solutions. By fusing advanced engineering with eco-conscious design, the company consistently delivers solutions that align with the evolving demands of brand owners and consumers, all while prioritizing environmental stewardship.
