Südpack is vigorously advancing the performance and sustainability of Multipeel, positioning it as the optimal packaging solution for sliced cheese and cold meats within the food and beverage packaging sector.

The innovative reclose system of Multipeel effectively prevents products from drying out prematurely, ensuring they maintain their freshness, flavor, and appealing appearance. Furthermore, this added convenience is crucial, as consumer surveys reveal it holds significant importance for the majority of shoppers.

According to Südpack, three primary reclose systems dominate the European market for sliced cheese and cold meats: snap-on lid systems, reclosable labels or adhesive strips, and lidding films featuring integrated reclose mechanisms, such as Multipeel.

“Our system is definitely superior to other technical solutions in terms of material efficiency, costs and line performance. Snap-on lids are considered less sustainable due to the substantial material requirements for the heavy lid solution. And while reclosable labels weigh less, they are economically less attractive. Line performance in the packaging process is also significantly restricted,” explained Valeska Haux, vice president of strategic marketing & sustainability at Südpack.

Südpack emphasizes that the integrated Multipeel function makes it easy to open and securely reclose the packaging. In fact, the Multipeel pack significantly reduces moisture and weight loss in sliced cheese after the first opening, compared to packaging concepts lacking a reclose system. This preservation of freshness ensures that the cheese remains appetizing down to the very last slice, minimizing waste.

“As a result, Multipeel packs contribute to a more positive eco-balance for cheese – a product with a fairly high carbon footprint compared to other foods,” highlighted Haux.

The Multipeel top web product family comprises both conventional material composites and recyclable structures based on polypropylene. When paired with suitable bottom webs, these materials lead to recyclable packaging solutions that excel in reclose functionality.

Available with varying barrier functions, the Multipeel films cater to product protection and mechanical requirements. For instance, bulk packaging that requires frequent openings and closings can benefit from these advanced features. Regardless of whether the conventional or recyclable films are utilized, they can be seamlessly processed on standard machines. The established, practice-proven Südpack reclose system ensures high process reliability and product safety, promoting optimal production output.

Haux observed a robust demand for reclose systems that matches the current market trends. As the focus on reducing food waste intensifies among end consumers, she noted that legislators worldwide are also prioritizing this critical issue.

“Apart from that, the sharp increase in food prices has also led to more mindful behavior,” Haux explained. “That is why packaging with reclose systems will remain indispensable in the foreseeable future from both an environmental and ecological point of view.”
