SIG has been awarded the prestigious Green Packaging Star Award for its innovative SIG Terra MidiBloc Alu-free packaging solution. This groundbreaking SIG Terra Alu-free material is recognized as the world’s first aluminium-free packaging option specifically designed for aseptic carton packs. For nearly two decades, the annual Austrian Green Packaging Star Award has celebrated the most effective and sustainable innovations in packaging.
Gmundner Dairy proudly stands as the first company in Austria to adopt this innovative packaging solution. This advancement further reduces the carbon footprint of SIG’s standard carton packs, thanks to its unique composite structure that eliminates the aluminium layer. Since launching their dairy products in carton packs utilizing SIG Terra Alu-free material last year, Gmundner has successfully saved over 160 tonnes of CO2 emissions*.
The esteemed Green Packaging Star Award was presented during a ceremony at Fachpack in Nürnberg on September 25. Focused on the themes of sustainable packaging and recycling, this award highlights advancements in environmentally-friendly packaging solutions. It is awarded annually by Kompack magazine alongside the Austrian Research Institute of Chemistry. With this commendation, SIG is now eligible for the WorldStar Award presented by the World Packaging Organization (WPO).
Vanessa Bogner, Marketing Manager D-A-CH at SIG: “It’s a great accolade for SIG Terra Alu-free packaging material to be recognized as an outstanding innovation in the field of exceptional sustainable packaging solutions. Our SIG Terra portfolio is part of our continuous progress in this area, as we strive to develop an aseptic, alu-layer-free packaging material with full barrier protection, and a paper content of at least 90% by 2030 – with an interim target of at least 85% by 2025.”
The jury of the Green Packaging Star Award acknowledged SIG’s industry-first solution, which reduces the already low carbon footprint of SIG standard packaging material by up to 23%. This assessment is based on independent ISO-compliant life-cycle assessments conducted from cradle to grave for Europe: https://www.sig.biz/en/sustainability/life-cycle-assessments. The SIG Terra Alu-free packaging consists of up to 82% FSCTM-certified renewable paperboard, complemented by ultra-thin polymer layers that ensure long-lasting protection of products without requiring refrigeration.
Christoph Engl, Managing Director of Gmundner Dairy: “As the first producer in Austria to bring shelf-stable milk to the market in an aseptic carton pack without an aluminium layer, we celebrate this outstanding award with our partner SIG. Together we continue to set a new benchmark in the field of sustainable packaging, by offering aseptic carton packs with no aluminium layer – a milestone in sustainability not only for our company, but also for retailers and consumers, who increasingly demand lower carbon, more sustainable packaging solutions.”
*Total savings were calculated by comparing the CO2 emissions of standard carton packaging with aluminium against those of aluminium-free carton packaging, based on the quantity of sleeves delivered using SIG Terra Alu-free material.
