SIG Terra Alu-free + Full Barrier – SIG’s award-winning full barrier packaging material for aseptic carton packs, free of aluminum, is leading the way in food and drink sustainable packaging. This innovative solution has been honored with the Design for Circularity award by the 4evergreen Alliance ‘Circularity Success Stories’ initiative. Additionally, the Palurec PolyAl recycling plant, in which SIG is a key investor alongside industry partners Elopak and Tetra Pak, has received the Circularity Best Practices award.
4evergreen, an alliance of over 100 members including SIG, represents every stage of the fiber-based packaging lifecycle, from forests to producers, designers, brand owners, and recyclers. With the goal of achieving a 90% recycling rate for fiber-based packaging in Europe by 2030, the alliance acknowledges exceptional projects and initiatives that champion circularity and fiber-based packaging, with the support of 4evergreen tools. Winners have the exclusive opportunity to present their achievements at the upcoming 4evergreen Annual Conference scheduled for November 20th, both in Brussels and online.
SIG is dedicated to reducing the use of aluminum and polymers in its packaging materials, while maintaining top-notch quality. The company is at the forefront of sustainable packaging innovation with its SIG Terra portfolio, which offers remarkable on-shelf appeal and outstanding environmental credentials. Among the latest additions to SIG’s sustainable innovation pipeline is SIG Terra Alu-free + Full Barrier, the world’s first full barrier solution for aseptic cartons without an aluminum layer. This groundbreaking solution ensures the protection of oxygen-sensitive products, such as juices, over extended periods without the need for refrigeration. The recognition of this achievement through the award underscores its significance for the packaging industry and the food and beverage sector.
To drive progress in circularity, the industry must unite in transforming used beverage cartons into valuable resources and keeping them in circulation. SIG is fully committed to the ten industry commitments outlined in the ambitious 2030 roadmap by the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE), including achieving a verified 70% recycling rate of used beverage cartons in the European Union. The Palurec PolyAl recycling plant in Germany, launched by the Fachverband Kartonverpackungen für flüssige Nahrungsmittel e.V. (FKN – Association for Beverage Cartons) in 2021, with joint investment from the major beverage carton manufacturers, significantly contributes to carton recycling in Europe. This facility transforms PolyAl, the plastic-aluminum mix recovered from used beverage cartons, into marketable raw materials. The award recognizes the valuable efforts of SIG and its industry partners in advancing used beverage carton recycling in Europe.
Stefan Mergel, Head of Global Sustainability and Digital Marketing at SIG: “We are honored by 4evergreen’s circularity awards, which acknowledge our commitment to circularity in the beverage carton industry.
