Swiss packaging solution provider SIG celebrates a significant milestone this June, marking 170 years of operation in the industry.

Founded in 1853 and based in Neuhausen, Switzerland, SIG takes this opportunity to reflect on its long history of innovative solutions and look towards an exciting future. Through a series of events, the company showcases its present accomplishments and explores its potential for tomorrow, all encapsulated in their strapline: SIG – for better. This phrase inspires the development of sustainable solutions and pioneering technology.

The first celebratory event on June 17th welcomed residents from Neuhausen’s local community to SIG’s industrial area and headquarters, providing them with the chance to explore the facility while enjoying a delightful food festival. On June 20th, customers from around the world were invited to an exclusive event that offered a tour through SIG’s history and concluded with a celebratory dinner.

The final event took place on June 22nd when SIG leaders convened for a two-day intensive leadership meeting, emphasizing the importance of this milestone for the company.

According to Samuel Sigrist, the CEO of SIG, reaching 170 years of operation is a cause for celebration and an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the company’s spirit to global customers and employees.

“The events reinforced our commitment to delivering better for customers, consumers, and the world,” Sigrist noted.

SIG stands as a leading provider of sustainable, innovative, and versatile packaging solutions, working closely with customers to deliver food products to consumers in a safe, sustainable, and affordable manner on a global scale.

SIG embarked on its food packaging journey in 1906 with chocolates, and in 1930, launched the first beverage carton and filling machine in Europe. In 1955, Scholle (now part of SIG) revolutionized liquid storage distribution with the invention of the bag-in-box format. Further breakthroughs were seen in 1975 when beverage carton provider PKL introduced the combibloc aseptic packaging and filling system. SIG acquired PKL in 1989, paving the way for growth in aseptic packaging.

At the turn of the century, SIG made the strategic decision to focus solely on its packaging business, solidifying its position as one of the industry’s key players. In 2022, the acquisition of Scholle IPN and Evergreen Asia expanded SIG’s offerings to include fresh and aseptic cartons, bag-in-box, and spouted pouches.

Today, SIG proudly holds the distinction of being the only system supplier worldwide to cover carton, spouted pouch, and bag-in-box packaging, reinforcing its position as a leading sustainable packaging solutions provider.

Committed to achieving net positivity, SIG has categorized its sustainability initiatives into four core areas: Climate+, Forest+, Resource+, and Food+. Through responsible sourcing and sustainable innovations, SIG has emerged as an industry leader.
