An Amcor Capsules and Aludium partnership has revolutionized the market for screwcaps by introducing a certified and independently verified low-carbon aluminium product.
With Aludium being one of Europe’s premier aluminium suppliers, this collaboration offers an exceptional solution for environmentally-conscious consumers.
The remarkable result of this partnership is an aluminium product that boasts a more than 50% reduction in carbon footprint compared to the average carbon footprint for primary aluminium sold in Europe. By employing the innovative Aludium Eco Brand 4.0 technology, the product emits less than 4 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of aluminium, from the initial stages of raw material extraction to final delivery. This impressive achievement is made possible through the utilization of recycled materials and the careful selection of low-carbon primary aluminium. Remarkably, when compared to primary aluminium produced in China, it showcases an average carbon footprint reduction of over 80% (China primary aluminium: 20 tonnes CO2 eq/tonne alu, source: The International Aluminium Institute).
This sustainable breakthrough also encompasses Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions, which results in the production of only 4 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of semi-finished aluminium.
According to The International Aluminium Institute, primary aluminium is derived from alumina, typically through electrolysis, with an aluminium content of 99.7%. Primary aluminium does not include alloying additives, whereas recycled aluminium may contain a minor amount of runaround scrap (Source: Global Advisory Group GAG – Guidance “Terms and Definitions” – 2011-01 and The International Aluminium Institute (IAI)).
“We are dedicated to bringing more sustainable products to the market,” asserts Bertrand Daru, sustainability director of Amcor Capsules. “Already leading with 96% of our products being recycle-ready, we strive to further minimize CO2 emissions during manufacturing. Our aluminium screw caps now present a more sustainable alternative for wine and spirits brands and distributors.”
The verification and certification of the GHG emissions associated with this innovative aluminium generation have been diligently conducted by an independent third party, ensuring compliance with ISO-14067-1:2018 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standards. The rigorous nature of this certification process exemplifies the commitment of Amcor Capsules and Aludium to utmost transparency regarding the carbon footprint of their aluminium products.
