Sabert Corporation Europe proudly announces its status as a founding member of the newly established Alliance for Fibre-Based Packaging. This organization aims to serve as a leading voice in the fibre-based packaging industry, particularly in shaping and executing waste and recycling policies in the UK.
Key members joining this initiative include renowned brands such as McDonald’s, Costa Coffee, M&S, Huhtamaki, Seda, Benders, Colpac, Sonoco, ProAmpac, Coveris, Graphic Packaging, and the European Carton Makers Association (ECMA).
“We are proud to be working with other businesses across the fibre-based packaging value chain,” states Alex Noake, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Sabert Corporation Europe. “The Alliance will focus on the benefits of fibre-based and fibre-based composite (FBC) packaging, which perform critical packaging functions to protect food and other consumer goods, provide consumer safety and hygiene, and enable convenience and efficiency.”
The establishment of the Alliance comes at a pivotal moment for the UK’s waste and recycling policies, with the introduction of Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (pEPR) this year. Moreover, the ongoing rollout of Simpler Recycling will standardize recycling collections for both businesses and households across England.
The primary objective of the Alliance is to ensure effective representation during the pEPR development as the UK transitions to a producer pays model. This model aims to foster a level playing field among materials, enhance the acceptance of fibre-based packaging within the UK’s fibre collection and recycling system, and advocate for the fibre-based packaging sector in upcoming recycling and waste policy discussions.
Setting the Gold Standard
“Sabert has over 40 years of experience in manufacturing innovative, value-added products, with our capabilities continuously evolving to encompass all substrates,” asserts Alex Noake.
“More than a decade ago, Sabert introduced high-quality, functional Bagasse Pulp packaging solutions to the European market, setting the gold standard. As we approach 2025, bagasse and paperboard will remain central to our R&D initiatives as we strive to push the boundaries of fibre-based packaging. We have exciting announcements planned for the year ahead.”
“We emphasize that all our food and drink packaging is sourced renewably and fully recyclable. Additionally, we aim for a significant inclusion of recycled material. To close the loop effectively, it is crucial that as much fibre-based packaging as possible is collected, sorted, and recycled. Therefore, we are committed to collaborating closely with the Alliance, the UK government, and various stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of waste and recycling policies that promote this goal.”
