pladis Global, a leading force in the rapidly expanding confectionery and chocolate sector, proudly encompasses iconic brands such as GODIVA, McVitie’s, Flipz, and Demet’s Turtles. Recently, the company has joined forces with Coveris, a premier European packaging manufacturer recognized for its sustainable paper and plastic solutions. Together, they aim to revolutionize U.S. confectionery packaging by shifting to environmentally friendly alternatives. This collaboration will phase out existing OPP/paper non-recyclable pre-made block bottom bags in favor of fully recyclable paper-based options.

Innovative and Recyclable Packaging

The newly designed pre-made Block Bottom Bags comply with the CEFLEX circular design guidelines, among others, which facilitate effective collection, sorting, and recycling. This initiative supports compliance with EU regulations, including PPWR, and actively contributes to waste reduction and pollution prevention. Notably, these bags are fully recyclable within their designated recycling streams. Crafted specifically for confectionery products, they represent an optimal balance of recyclability and functionality. By leveraging Coveris’ expertise in paper conversion, these bags achieve remarkable machine performance, material strength, and print quality, addressing longstanding challenges in paper packaging, such as cracking and fiber breakage in side gusset areas that impact product appearance and consistency.

Collaborative Development and Technical Validation

pladis’s introduction of the pre-made Block Bottom Bag to the U.S. market was the result of joint technical trials and process validation. The innovative design minimizes fiber breakage, ensuring an eye-catching, premium shelf appearance while preserving the integrity of printed artwork, even through transport and handling. The high stiffness and dimensional stability of the paper structure enhance shelf presentation, while the heat-sealable top fold guarantees secure sealing and efficient processing on pladis’ existing packing lines.

“We have been searching for a recyclable paper pre-made bag that meets our performance and quality expectations,” stated a spokesperson from pladis North America. “Coveris’ pre-made Block Bottom Bag impressed us with its combination of sustainability, visual appeal, and technical reliability. It allowed us a seamless change process and provides the look and quality our brands require.”

“Coveris is known to be a frontrunner in terms of sustainability. With our No Waste vision avoiding waste in all its forms, we focus on developing sustainable packaging alternatives. Our continuous investment in production technologies and state-of-the-art printing is evident in our collaboration with pladis, which exemplifies how sustainable packaging innovation can yield tangible benefits,” noted Noah Hilt, Global Account Manager for pladis Group at Coveris. “By merging our expertise in flexible paper technology, printing, and converting, we have crafted a packaging solution that adheres to the highest visual and functional standards while aligning fully with circular economy principles – with next-generation options already on the horizon.”
