Origin Materials and IMDvista, a Swiss high-tech company specializing in the vision inspection of closures and other packaging components, have announced a strategic partnership to develop the world’s first PET cap and closure manufacturing system.
“By collaborating with best-in-class manufacturing partners like IMD, we are revolutionizing the production of PET caps and closures on a commercial scale,” said Origin co-CEO and co-founder John Bissell. “Our high-throughput system will enable us to bring the recycling, sustainability, and performance benefits of our PET cap and closure solution to a global audience. Our goal is to establish multiple production lines, not only enhancing beverage packaging but also catering to containers of various types.”
Bissell continued, “IMD is a key partner for Origin as we initiate our initial production line. With a strong global presence and advanced camera systems capable of inspecting thousands of closures per minute, IMD’s expertise will be invaluable to us as we introduce the world’s first-ever PET cap and closure manufacturing system.”
“A PET closure is the ideal solution,” stated IMD chief sales officer (CSO) Martin Gerber, emphasizing the innovative nature of Origin’s PET caps and closures. Gerber expressed confidence in the success of the new closure design after witnessing Origin’s manufacturing development system in action. “I foresee great success for this closure,” Gerber added.
According to Gerber, IMD’s investment in inspection and handling for PET caps signifies a significant commitment to the success of this project. He mentioned, “IMD is dedicated to supporting the production of top-quality PET caps that meet market demands, and we anticipate a rapid return on our investment.”
“We are excited to showcase our PET caps alongside the IMD team at the upcoming NPE2024 conference in Orlando, Florida,” announced Bissell, who is scheduled to speak at the event.
Origin and IMD have been working together for over 12 months to develop a high-throughput production system for manufacturing the world’s first PET caps and closures at a commercial scale.
Origin’s solution marks a significant advancement in packaging, designed for recycling circularity and improved performance. The solution enhances recyclability, promotes lightweight design, and extends product shelf-life, targeting a market valued at over $65 billion.
