Mondi has partnered with long-standing customer Welton, Bibby and Baron to develop an innovative paper-based bag for pre-packaged bread.

These striking white and brown bags utilize Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce, ensuring premium protection, strength, and aesthetics. This recyclable packaging is now available on retail shelves across the UK.

Welton, Bibby and Baron is converting Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce into both brown and white paper bags for various pre-packed fresh bread products. Mondi produces its strong base kraft paper from responsibly sourced fibers and applies a specialized in-house coating to guarantee essential barrier properties.

Mondi’s FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce is the thinnest option within its barrier paper range, providing the necessary strength for higher filling weights while maintaining food-compliant protection against water vapor, grease, and moisture. As a result, the final packaging effectively keeps the bread fresh, soft, and moist while offering a recyclable alternative to the previous unrecyclable solutions.

Both bags feature a premium design with windows that allow consumers to view the bread inside while supporting packaging recyclability. The brown bag includes a glassine window, which is fully recyclable with the paper bag. The white bag, on the other hand, comes with a detachable film window that can be easily separated for disposal in different recycling bins. Additionally, these paper bags are eligible for a recycling label from the On Pack Recycling Label Scheme (OPRL) and can be conveniently recycled through kerbside collection throughout the UK.

Mick Robinson, business solutions manager for functional paper and films at Mondi, states: “With our MAP2030 sustainability targets, we are fully committed to developing circular packaging options that meet the needs of our customers and their end-users, who seek more sustainable and convenient solutions in their shopping habits and overall lifestyles. Long-standing partnerships like this enable us to actively support brands and retailers on their sustainability journeys.”

Andrew Lockyear, technical manager at Welton Bibby & Baron, adds: “Close collaboration with the Mondi team allowed us to access a wealth of expertise throughout the entire process, facilitating a rapid turnaround for this exceptional result. To meet prospective regulatory requirements, we will work closely with Mondi, enhancing existing solutions and proactively leading the sustainability initiatives.”
