Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has partnered with Prymat, a Polish manufacturer of dried seasonings, to develop packaging that enhances a circular economy while safeguarding aromatic spices.

As part of this collaboration, Prymat will adopt new paper-based packaging made from Mondi’s re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate. This innovative high-barrier solution emerged from comprehensive testing, confirming its sustainability as a viable alternative to conventional non-recyclable multi-layer packaging.

Mondi’s product impact assessment tool indicates that FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional multi-layer plastic or aluminum packaging. Comprising at least 80% premium paper with a functional barrier coating optimized for recycling, this packaging has proven recyclable, based on the latest CEPI recyclability lab tests. By allowing valuable materials to persist in circulation, it excels in preserving the aroma and taste of spices with exceptional protection against oxygen, moisture, and grease. Its oxygen transmission rate (OTR) is below 0.5 cm3/m2d, and the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) remains below 0.5 g/m2d.

The FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate also ensures high-quality printing, enhancing the presentation of Prymat’s spice offerings on retail shelves. Its stiffness allows for a reliable dead fold, enabling users to securely close the pack after the first use, maintaining integrity.

This new food and drink packaging solution seamlessly integrates with Prymat’s existing filling lines. It not only meets the customer’s sustainability objectives but also enhances operational efficiency, eliminating any need for costly machinery investments.

Adrian Goralski, Managing Director at Mondi Solec, states, “It is essential to understand the individual needs of each customer when creating packaging solutions. There are often several different routes to sustainability, and at Mondi, we work closely with brands to thoroughly learn about every step of their production, distribution and end use, so that we can create and test various options and be sure we are delivering the best possible and most sustainable outcome.”

Marta Klęka-Nowa, PR Manager at Prymat, remarks: “Prymat, as a leading producer of spices and food additives, has consistently sought solutions to transition from multi-layer packaging to recyclable materials. Given the very high barrier requirements and the preservation of spice quality, aroma, and freshness, this posed a significant technological challenge. Thanks to our collaboration with Mondi, we were able to develop a solution that aligns our sustainability ambitions with the highest standards of product quality.

Working with Mondi was such a valuable experience: we truly became one team working together towards a shared goal.”
