The substantial multi-million-pound investment is believed to be the UK’s largest blown extrusion facility dedicated to polyethylene (PE) films. This advancement marks a significant milestone in the realm of food and drink sustainability, particularly within the sustainable packaging sector.

This investment supports Coveris’ strategic expansion into the vacuum skin packaging (VSP) market. The facility includes a specialized conversion hall and state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment designed to optimize production efficiency.

Vacuum skin packaging is distinct for its skin-like appearance that conforms to products, enhancing their visual appeal. Moreover, it provides an impressive shelf life of up to 28 days, effectively extending freshness and minimizing food waste—a critical factor in food and drink sustainability.

Integrating VSP packaging into Coveris’ product lineup capitalizes on its industry-leading capability to produce nine-layer EVOH barrier film specifically for the meat, fish, and dairy sectors. This positions the company as a key player in the food and drink packaging market.

During Cooper’s visit, discussions also centered on government legislation and Coveris’ commitment to its No Waste sustainability strategy, which encompasses packaging innovations, operational efficiency, and company culture. This alignment further showcases the importance of sustainable solutions in food and drink marketing.

“I was delighted to open the very impressive new conversion hall at Coveris in Winsford. It was particularly pleasing to see Coveris’ commitment to sustainability in finding sustainable solutions to plastic packaging. I am also very pleased that the company is investing in its Winsford site and look forward to seeing the manufacturer continue to go from strength to strength here in Mid Cheshire,” he said.

Sujoy Bose, Coveris Winsford’s managing director, emphasized, “This is a significant investment for the site and an exciting opportunity for us to grow as the UK’s only producer of vacuum skin packaging. We were also proud to showcase the advancements we are making in support of our No Waste strategy, including our award-winning sustainable packaging innovations and projects to drive down waste and operate more efficiently, driven by the dedicated team at Coveris Winsford.”
