Metsä Group’s Metsä Board is spearheading advancements in packaging with the introduction of harmonized regulations across the European Union, aimed at promoting recyclable materials. A prime example is Muoto™, a pioneering fibre-based innovation designed to meet the stringent requirements of the food and beverage industry while transitioning from plastic.
Visitors can explore Muoto at Interpack 2026, specifically at Hall 8a, Stand D49, where Metsä Board will demonstrate how fibre-based materials are revolutionizing packaging designs to satisfy demanding performance criteria.
Muoto employs a unique three-dimensional molded fibre technology, created directly from wet wood pulp without needing intermediate processing. This method allows for the production of lightweight yet sturdy packaging that can take on complex shapes. With a design intentional to withstand moisture and grease, Muoto is particularly suited for various food service and packaging applications while adhering to food contact standards.
For applications requiring improved barrier properties, Muoto’s renewable molded wood fibre structures can be paired with barrier films, making it ideal for packaging meats, fish, poultry, and ready-to-eat meals. Additionally, integrating Muoto with paperboard—as seen in branded sleeves and ready-to-ship corrugated packaging—creates an all-fibre solution that enhances branding, shelf presence, and overall functionality.
“Muoto is pushing the boundaries of fibre-based materials into more demanding sectors. Our current focus lies primarily in foodservice and select industrial food packaging. Combined with premium paperboard components, Muoto paves the way for innovative fibre-based solutions across a spectrum of applications. We’re inviting customers to trial both uncoated and laminated fibre options for various packaging needs, including takeaway containers and trays,” says Antti Valtonen, VP of Muoto projects at Metsä Group’s innovation division, Metsä Spring.
Currently in a demonstration and pre-commercialization phase, Muoto is receiving invaluable feedback from customers and partners, which is essential for fine-tuning its performance, manufacturability, and suitability for end use. Metsä Board is actively collaborating with brand owners and converters to design new formats for future fibre-based packaging solutions.
“Through Muoto, we are exploring innovative concepts to assist brand owners in developing packaging solutions that are ready for the future,” states Erja Hyrsky, SVP of Commercial Operations at Metsä Board.
“By melding molded fibre with paperboard, Muoto becomes an integral part of our packaging offerings, enhancing value, particularly in premium products where performance, branding, and recyclability are crucial. This will also aid customers in adapting to increasingly strict packaging regulations.”
