The Procter & Gamble Company has acquired the dietary supplements firm for $3.8 billion in cash following an agreement with L Catterton, a leader in consumer investment.
Thorne, established in 1984, attracted the investment from L Catterton in October 2023 due to an emerging market for clinically-driven solutions and tailored healthcare options. Throughout its 42-year history, Thorne has firmly established itself in the health and wellness sector, catering to both athletes and general consumers. L Catterton has played a crucial role in its recent growth phase by enhancing recruitment, marketing efforts, and investing in research, development, and infrastructure.
Thorne’s product lineup includes various nutritional supplements and innovative technology solutions, notably Taia, an AI-driven wellness advisor.
Colin Watts, the CEO of Thorne, expressed appreciation for L Catterton’s partnership, stating, “L Catterton has been an outstanding partner over the past several years. They shared our long-term vision for Thorne, investing in our people, strengthening our capabilities across digital, AI, and supply chain, and advancing our scientific rigor, world-class manufacturing, quality standards, and innovation that define Thorne – all while helping us better serve healthcare practitioners and customers.”
He added, “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and grateful for the role they played in helping prepare Thorne for this next chapter.”
The acquisition by P&G is a significant milestone in Thorne’s growth trajectory and will also enhance P&G Health Care’s offerings, aligning with the rising consumer focus on self-care, prevention, and personalized wellness.
“As we looked to the future, we kept coming back to one question: What will best position Thorne to continue fulfilling its mission?” Watts continued. “We believe P&G is the right partner to help us expand our impact while staying true to the values and standards that have always defined Thorne.”
Paul Gama, CEO of P&G Health Care, remarked, “This is an important step for P&G’s Personal Health Care business. Consumer interest in self-care, prevention, wellness, and personalized health continues to grow, and Thorne strengthens our position in premium wellness with a trusted, science-backed brand that complements our existing portfolio.”
The transaction is anticipated to finalize later this year, pending standard closing conditions and necessary regulatory approvals, with P&G acquiring Thorne from L Catterton’s Flagship Fund.
