Today, James Cropper, the leader in advanced materials and paper products, launched its innovative sustainable solution for the drinks industry—tops and bases for inner bottle packaging crafted from moulded fibre.

Designed specifically for the champagne and whisky sectors, these tops and bases represent an industry first. Utilizing Colourform—James Cropper’s cutting-edge thermoformed, moulded fibre packaging innovation—these components are produced from bespoke moulds to fit the bottle shape precisely. They are securely placed within rigid boxes, providing optimal product protection.

This development replaces traditional plastic and foam components, aligning with brands’ efforts to stay ahead of the European Commission’s proposed regulations on packaging waste. These guidelines stipulate that all packaging must be recyclable by 2030 and that the weight and volume of packaging should be minimized while ensuring functional integrity.

Furthermore, the Colourform inserts allow brands to diminish or eliminate non-sustainable materials in their supply chains. Impressively, these tops and bases are five times lighter than conventional alternatives, significantly decreasing carbon emissions.

From the consumer perspective, these tops and bases provide a sustainable choice, as they are 100% recyclable without the need for dismantling. This ensures convenient disposal alongside household recycling practices.

Renowned for its papermaking heritage, James Cropper continues to lead the way in pioneering material solutions. The introduction of these tops and bases marks the latest advancement in James Cropper’s commitment to the luxury drinks sector, complementing previous collaborations such as the ‘Chalk Wrap’ with Maison Ruinart champagne and custom moulded fibre wraps for Bruichladdich whisky bottles.

Scott Jones, Business Development Manager, Moulded Fibre at James Cropper, stated, “The new tops and bases have been born out of our partnerships with luxury brands who share our vision for the highest quality packaging that never compromises on functionality or style.”

As with all Colourform products from James Cropper, the tops and bases are available in white, black, or customized shades upon request. Additionally, clients can opt to emboss or deboss their logos, enhancing the consumer experience.

Scott Jones further emphasized, “We are dedicated to inventing packaging that doesn’t cost the earth and helps brands and consumers have the very best product experience whilst contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Looking ahead, the new tops and bases will be available starting early September 2024.
