Innovia Films has expanded its product line to include floatable polyolefin shrink films that enhance the light-blocking properties of shrink sleeves used on containers for dairy, food supplements, and nutritional products.
The new film, a low-density white film made from polyolefin (WAPO), maintains its floatability when printed. This innovation has been developed by the material science pioneer, which specializes in manufacturing polyolefin film materials for labels and packaging. The film is set to be produced at the Innovia site in Płock, Poland.
According to Simon Huber, managing director of Innovia Europe, “We have seen a need in the market to create an opaque film that floats and can be combined with transparent PET bottles. This innovation is a gamechanger and can enable dairy brands and other companies with light-sensitive products to switch to a transparent PET bottle that can be recycled back into food-grade packaging, closing the loop.”
Lucija Kralj, business unit director labels EMEA, notes that the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWR) being created by the EU will drive design for recycling. “As all packaging will need to be recyclable by 2030 and certain recycled content targets will be mandatory, a transparent PET bottle with a floatable sleeve that automatically detaches during sorting and recycling is the ideal solution.”
Just like the clear film range, RayoFloat white APO facilitates easy separation and removal of labels from PET bottles and other types of plastic containers in the recycling process. The film automatically detaches during sorting and recycling in the sink/float process, enabling a high yield of high-quality PET flakes that are the basis of food-grade recycling. Additionally, the film supports a closed loop in the production facility and contains up to 20% post-industrial recycled content.
The company has patented the film solution, which will be manufactured in Poland but made available globally.
In conclusion, the new floatable polyolefin shrink films from Innovia Films offer a groundbreaking solution for the packaging industry, facilitating the transition to recyclable and sustainable packaging in line with current and upcoming regulations.
