Innovia Films, a frontrunner in material science and a manufacturer of BOPP films, has unveiled P2G—a transparent, high gas transmission BOPP film specifically engineered for flow wrap applications in food and drink packaging, particularly for fresh produce and pre-prepared vegetables.

P2G is designed to enhance performance and versatility, assisting brand owners and packers in preserving the freshness, quality, and aesthetic appeal of fresh produce throughout the supply chain. By optimizing gas transmission rates, this innovative film aids in respiration control, thereby extending shelf life and significantly reducing food waste.

This film is built for reliability even in rigorous environments. Notably, P2G is heat-sealable on both sides, ensuring secure and consistent sealing performance. Its remarkable optical clarity allows consumers to see produce clearly, maintaining visual enticement. Furthermore, the film’s puncture and impact resistance at low temperatures offer robust protection during both transport and storage, remaining unaffected by fluctuating climatic conditions.

“P2G represents the next generation of fresh produce packaging,” explains Megan Hinkley, Senior Product Manager – Packaging at Innovia Films. “It combines functionality, reliability, and sustainability to meet the evolving needs of retailers, packers, and consumers, while supporting the industry’s transition to more circular packaging solutions.”

Sustainability at Its Core

P2G places a strong emphasis on sustainability. As a mono-material polypropylene solution, the film is fully recyclable within the PP waste stream, facilitating the move toward environmentally responsible food and drink sustainable packaging. Its recyclability, combined with its capacity to significantly extend shelf life, leads to measurable reductions in food waste across the supply chain—an effective strategy for lowering the environmental impact of food packaging.

P2G aligns with the forthcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will take effect in 2025. This film supports PPWR objectives by reducing packaging waste and enhancing recyclability, aiding brand owners in the pursuit of fully recyclable packaging by 2030.

To fortify its sustainability credentials, P2G can incorporate chemically recycled and bio-sourced ISCC-certified polymers through mass balance. This methodology enables compliance with recycled content targets while maintaining the performance standards required for fresh produce packaging. Moreover, it champions circular economy principles by minimizing reliance on fossil-based resources.

Reducing Carbon Footprint Across the Supply Chain

By extending the shelf life of fresh produce, P2G directly contributes to diminishing the carbon footprint of the food supply chain. Reduced food waste diminishes the necessity for excess agricultural production, thereby cutting associated greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, fewer spoiled products translate to lower transport and restocking requirements, leading to reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

P2G is printable for branding and customization, providing packers and retailers with a solution that not only excels in performance but also helps products stand out on shelves.

Whether for packaging leafy greens, chopped vegetables, or other fresh produce, P2G guarantees freshness, protection, and sustainability without compromise.
