OMNI Systems, a prominent US supplier of premium labels within the logistics, food, and consumer packaged goods sectors, recently highlighted its advancements in digital printing through a sustained collaboration with Domino. Over the past few years, the company has added several Domino K600i digital UV inkjet printers, significantly enhancing efficiency, precision, and scalability in label production.

The organization currently operates three K600i units at its facility in Cleveland, Ohio, consisting of two 558mm (22-inch) dual-bar units and one 445mm (17-inch) single-bar unit. This setup boosts its capacity for producing high-quality variable data and sequential barcoded labels at increased speeds and volumes. Additionally, the latest K600i installation at OMNI’s St. Louis, Missouri location features a 445mm (17-inch) single-bar unit to bolster its expanding prime label market.

Dean Ketchum, Business Development Manager, underscored the company’s competitive edge by stating, “We pride ourselves on delivering the best price and highest quality in the market. Our ability to scale and provide cost-effective solutions set us apart from the competition, and Domino helps us with that.”

AJ Newkirk, who has over 20 years of experience with the company, starting as a Press Operator and now serving as Continuous Improvement Manager, also echoed this sentiment. “OMNI Systems has always focused on delivering low-cost, high-quality labels with exceptional service. Our ongoing investments in digital printing, particularly with Domino K600i technology, keep us at the forefront of efficiency and innovation while catering to our customers’ evolving needs.”

A Look Back at the Journey

OMNI Systems’ foray into digital printing dates back more than a decade with the installation of its first Domino K600i printer in 2013. Originally intended for a single client, the investment quickly proved crucial for expanding the company’s capabilities. A notable achievement includes a partnership with one of the largest retailers globally, focusing on the development of a key logistics and shipping label.

Understanding the Technology

The Domino K600i is an established, highly efficient monochrome digital UV inkjet solution designed for printing variable data on a variety of coated or uncoated web and sheet applications. Typically integrated into a flexo press, rewinder, or finishing system, it can print up to 150 meters per minute (492 fpm) at a resolution of 600 dpi in a dual-bar format, or 75 meters per minute (246 fpm) as a single-bar. Standard print bar widths include 108mm (4.25”), 220mm (8.69”), 333mm (13.11”), 445mm (17.54”), and 558mm (22”).

Optimizing Production

In the Cleveland facility, where production operates around the clock for five days a week, the capacity to print between 6.5 to 8 million labels each day on the 558mm (22”) K600i units demonstrates the durability and reliability of Domino’s technology. The advanced dual-bar setup allows for faster production rates while ensuring superior print quality, which is a significant factor driving the company’s commitment to further invest in Domino solutions.

Preparing for Future Demands

Mike Murton, President of OMNI Systems, emphasized the necessity of producing high-quality variable data labels at scale. “As customer needs continue to evolve, particularly with the rise of QR codes and GS1’s Sunrise 2027 initiative, we are well-positioned to provide innovative solutions that meet modern supply chain demands.”

As OMNI Systems looks ahead, its commitment to digital printing reaffirms its aim to stay ahead in an increasingly data-driven landscape. The strategic alliance with Domino empowers the company to meet the high expectations set by global brands and logistics providers.

Gary Peterson, Domino’s Senior Account Manager for Variable Data Printing, who has been involved in this partnership for many years, commented on the collaboration’s success. “OMNI Systems’ focus on harnessing digital printing for variable data applications has made this relationship incredibly successful. Watching how they have leveraged the K600i over the years showcases their forward-thinking approach.”
