Eviosys, Europe’s leading producer of smart and sustainable metal packaging, is partnering with the food charity FareShare to enhance the output of its Food Life Extension (FLEX) project by an impressive 23%.

The FLEX initiative effectively combats food waste by transforming surplus fresh ingredients into long-lasting canned soups. By the end of 2024, the project aims to distribute 500,000 cans of this nutritious soup to individuals in need. With food poverty increasingly challenging in the UK—where 8 million adults reported experiencing food insecurity in 2024—this collaboration is more essential than ever.

Through the partnership with FareShare, Eviosys will enable FLEX to raise its projected output for the coming year by 145,000 cans, bringing the total to 625,000 cans. This effort translates to saving approximately 29 tonnes of fresh food from potential waste.

After canning, FareShare’s FLEX product is distributed via its extensive network of warehouses to 8,500 charities, which support various initiatives like school breakfast programs, lunch clubs for the elderly, homeless shelters, and community cafés.

Simon Millard, Director of Food at FareShare, said: “As FareShare enters its 30th year, we want to look ahead to the future of tackling food waste. We are incredibly grateful to Eviosys, whose generous support enables us to deliver more food to our network of charities and community groups. This partnership will help charities across the UK strengthen their communities through the power of food.”

Utilizing cans in this partnership presents an optimal solution for delivering meals to those in need. They can be easily stored and accessed at any time, effectively extending the shelf-life of the food inside. Furthermore, Eviosys has generously donated 112,500 cans at no cost, ensuring that no food goes to waste.

The surplus products will be processed and canned by Manchester-based NPD batch specialists, We Can Foods, whose production scale aligns perfectly with the surplus food levels managed by FareShare. Noteworthy is the distribution of the first 145,000 Eviosys cans filled with surplus soup from May 2024 to August 2024.

Aidan Ruddock, Commercial Director North Europe at Eviosys, said: “Eviosys is thrilled to support FareShare on their mission to end food waste and hunger. We firmly believe in the power of metal packaging to not only make the world a more sustainable place, but also to enable access to fresh, nutritious food for all. We are proud to contribute our expertise to such a worthy cause.”
