Mondi and Syntegon have collaborated to introduce recyclable paper packaging for dried foods like flour, sugar, and pasta to the market. The packaging incorporates Mondi’s acclaimed EcoVantage kraft paper, which has gained approval from ISEGA for use in the entire food packaging industry. Previously, EcoVantage was primarily utilized for paper shopping bags and is composed of responsibly sourced fresh fibers and recycled materials.

In this partnership, Mondi supplies Syntegon with EcoVantage rollstock, which is then finished with spot coating to create dust-tight, heat-sealable packaging. This innovative packaging ensures the elimination of contamination throughout the entire lifecycle of the product, from production to the consumers’ homes. Syntegon’s advanced technology ensures the minimal use of sealing agents, providing protection to powdered food items, and enables the packaging to be recyclable within existing paper waste streams.

The introduction of these new packaging solutions exemplifies an important aspect of Mondi Group’s MAP2030 targets. By using recycled fibers, EcoVantage kraft paper promotes waste prevention, material circulation, and recyclability within existing paper waste streams, as evidenced by Mondi’s Recycling Lab.

“Thanks to our close partnership with Syntegon and our extensive technical expertise in paper, we can assist our customers in making more sustainable choices,” says Elisabeth Schwaiger, Head of R&D and Intellectual Property Flexible Packaging at Mondi. “By achieving high recycling rates of paper and utilizing wood as a renewable material, we are delivering a packaging innovation that supports resource efficiency, waste reduction, and recyclability.”

Torsten Sauer, Director of Sustainability at Syntegon, adds, “Our objective is to create sustainable packaging solutions with minimal environmental impact. Through the utilization of recyclable paper packaging containing recycled materials, we are taking a significant step towards closing the circularity loop for primary food packaging.”
